Personal Life[edit]

Derek grew up in Deerfield, Illinois, with his parents, Ken and Sherry, and older sister, Tara. At age 10 he began to audition commercially and theatrically in Chicago. He had two call backs to be the original Mazda "Zoom Zoom" kid, but did not end up booking the part. He also came close to booking the lead in the Anthony Hopkins' movie, "Hearts in Atlantis", but did not make the final cut. After booking a few print advertisements, he was pulled out of acting and moved to California because of his father's new job. Once in California, his parents were insistent on him focusing in school and he was forced to discontinue acting. He reluctantly agreed, but after graduating at the top of his class, he was determined to get back into acting and journey up to Hollywood on his own. He now resides in Los Angeles acting full time. He hopes to later in life attend UCLA to study Neuroscience because of his deep interest in unlocking the secret of dreams.
