Archaeological Museum of Chania, Crete, Greece

The Archaelogical Museum of Chania is located in Chania and specifically in Chalepa. It is housed in an emblematic building, a landmark for the area and the wider region. Its permanent collection consists of three rooms on the ground floor and one on the first floor. Presents the archaelogical heritage of the regional unit of Chania over centuries.

The museum has a wealth of vases, sculputres, clay tablets with inscriptions, columns and mosaics, coins and jewellery.

Old building

The Archaeological Museum of Chania was founded in 1899 and from 1962 to 2020 it was housed in the monastery of St. Francis, in the city centre.

New building

Since April 2022 it has been housed in a new building in the area called Chalepa, where it opened to the public on 16 April 2022. It was designed by Theophanis Bobotis and has an area of 6,000 square meters. The number of objects on display is 3,500. The museum's exhibition spaces cover 2,000 square meters and also consists of four conversation workshops. The cost of its construction and completion amounts to EUR 15 million.
