Spam[edit]

Please read WP:EL. Basically, Wikipedia is not a link farm. Links should only be added if they have valuable information that does not belong in the article itself and if they are not trying to sell something. If the information in the link does belong it the article, it should be re-written (to avoid copyright issues) and added to the article. In general, articles should have very few links, because very few links fit these criteria. The idea is that we want our articles to be the best possible source of information on a topic, not a short article followed by a long list of links to other articles-- one might as well just google the subject and read the first dozen sites if we are going to assemble long external link lists.

Generally, if the link is trying to sell something, the bar to it's inclusion gets a lot higher-- a site with advertising, or that engages in direct sales would have to be truly extraordinary to pass muster.

Finally, don't be mislead if you see a lot of links in a lot of articles that violate the above: we're being spammed pretty massively, and there is often a substantial lag in cleaning things up. And please feel free to join in the cleanup!

New user post[edit]

Hi! I see you've been making good, constructive edits at Wikipedia. Let me suggest that you consider creating an account, or at least get in the habit of using the "Edit summary" box when you do an edit. You don't need to put much there-- "copyedit", "sp", "grammar", "revert vandalism" (usually abbreviated as "rv vandalism")-- although you can write quite a lengthy explanation if you want to.

Here's why. As you've probably noticed, there's quite a bit of vandalism on Wikipedia. When folks go looking for vandalism to clean up, the most likely edits are those made by an anonymous editor (one without an account) and with no Edit summary filled in.

So please consider doing one or the other, or better still, both. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

One other thing. I notice that you often do a number of small edits in a row on the same article. This makes for a crowded edit history, and makes users who want to look over your edits page back through a bunch of (generally) slow-loading pages. You can avoid this by using the Show Preview button more often, holding off on hitting Save Page 'til you're pretty sure you're done.

Other stuff[edit]

Google Earth images are legally complex; different datasets are copyrighted to different people and used under license. However, you can get around the copyright issues relatively easily by taking the image from NASA World Wind, a precursor to Google Earth (though functionally quite similar) - all the image datasets it uses are sourced from the US Government, and thus can be tagged {{PD-USGov-NASA}}. To start the list at a given name, use a URL like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:American_actors&from=Ford
To have all subcategories (up to 200) on the first page, use a suitable sort key in each, e.g. consisting of the name with a blank space in front.
