Cynthia Maughan (born 1949 in Bell, California; she grew up in Norwalk, California) is a Los Angeles-based video artist.

Education

Maughan began using black and white, open-reel video equipment in 1973, while at California State University, Long Beach. She received her MFA in Fine Art from CSULB in 1974. While a student, she married to Merwin Belin, also an artist. About beginning in video, Maughan remarked "What got me started was seeing the work of William Wegman when I was in graduate school, prior to moving to Pasadena. It was 1973 and Wegman was filling in for a teacher on sabbatical at the University of California at Long Beach, where I was studying." Afterall magazine

Work

Between 1973 and 1979, she made over 300 short tapes, performing with simple props or using graphics. Many of these were completed in a single take, without edits. In addition to showing work in numerous group exhibitions, Maughan was included in the 1976 Documenta in Kassel, Germany. In recent years, her distributor Electronic Arts Intermix has arranged various screenings. Maughan produces paintings and collages; some of these were exhibited at The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, California in 2009.

In the 1980s, Maughan played in several punk bands: Auto De Fé and the Nihils, Primitive State and and The Shrews.

Her videotapes are distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix, and her tapes are in the collection of The Getty Research Institute, where viewing duplicates are available on request.
