The Return was a 78 ton brig that sailed under Captain Askew from Wellington, New Zealand to Nelson, New Zealand on 16 May 1854 carrying Nelson's first Mayor, Joseph Dodson.[1]

The Return arrived in Wellington from San Francisco under Captain King on 17 May 1851.[2] On the 21 August it was back again having sailed under Captain Toohig from Port Victoria. She then sailed to other New Zealand ports, heading back to Wellington from Lyttleton on the 5 November.[3] The she continued to ply New Zealand waters, primarily out of Wellington to Lyttleton, but also to the Chatham Islands and Nelson. She also made trans Tasman sailings to Melbourne in 1853. Under Captain Walker she sailed Wellington to Kawhia and Melbourne, returning via Kawhia to Nelson on 2 May 1853.[4] In 1854 it was still sailing in New Zealand waters being at Amuri and Lyttleton in August and September.[5]
