Martin Södermark (born August 15th, 1983) is a licensed psychologist and specialist in Clinical psychology with a PhD in Medical Science [1]. He is also a musician and singer in a reggae band in Linköping, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

Research[edit]

Södermark's research interests are twofold. First, he is part of a research group at Örebro University, The Center for Health and Medical Psychology (CHAMP).[2] which unites researchers interested in psychological underpinnings and mechanisms in behavioral medicine. One of Södermark's contributions is his work on developing and evaluating a transdiagnostic treatment for emotion regulation[3] in a collaboration called the Hybrid project[4] [5].

Södermark's second focus in research is chronic pain and the evidence for psychological interventions in interdisciplinary multimodal pain rehabilitation programs, for example Acceptance and commitment therapy [6]. Much of this work has been done in the clinical setting of Pain and Rehabilitation Centre[7] at Linköping University Hospital.

Positions[edit]

Södermark currently holds a position as a Clinical psychologist at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine [8] at Linköping University Hospital, with a special interest in neuropsychology.

Until 2023, Södermark worked as a clinical psychologist with several organizational development projects at the Pain and Rehabilitation Centre[9] at Linköping University Hospital. He was, among other duties, involved in developing an evidence-based interdisciplinary multimodal pain rehabilitation program. For several years he was a member of a group of experienced clinicians who informed and continuously updated the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare on the evidence of current therapies for treatment of chronic pain[10]

Besides his clinical work, Södermark has co-worked and inspired several colleagues within his field. Some of these have contributed to this article: Nina Bendelin, Eric Forsyth Holmberg, Julia Salomonsson, Tobias Wiklund, Carl Wahlgren and Helena Romero.

Education[edit]

Södermark did one year of psychology studies at Universidad Latina in Costa Rica. He graduated as a psychologist (M.Sc. in Clinical Psychology) at Umeå University, Sweden, 2011, together with his long-term friend Kristofer NT Månsson[11], Associate Professor at Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Södermark later became a specialist in Clinical psychology on June 26th, 2020. On January 12th, 2024, Martin received a PhD at Linköping University[1] after several years of research on developing interventions for patients with chronic pain and emotional problems.

Södermark started his clinical training at S.V. Centro de Diagnostico in Costa Rica in 2008-2009. After graduation he did one year of supervised clinical training at the Pain and Rehabilitation Centre[9] at Linköping University Hospital, Sweden.

Martin is trilingual in Swedish, Spanish and English.

Publications and academical contributions[edit]

Södermark has publications and ongoing research collaborations with expertise in different areas and holds an h-index=3[12]. One of the articles[13] in his dissertation is published in the notable scientific journal Pain[14], which holds an impact factor of 7.4.

Along with his academic career, Södermark has become an appreciated and sought after lecturer both at universities and in clinical work. He has contributed to the education of psychologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists in their Master studies nationally and internationally. Alongside these assignments, Södermark has continuously lectured for patients in clinical care on topics such as the Psychology of Pain, Emotional Regulation, and Evidence based psychological treatments in Interdisciplinary Pain Rehabilitation Programs.

Hobbies[edit]

An example of Södermark's artistic contributions to a scientific summary (bottom right).

Södermark is a skilled musician/singer and plays several instruments. He is the lead guitarist of the Swedish reggae band Major Färdtjänst and the Awkward Jam[15]. One of Södermark's own recordings on YouTube has more than 70000 downloads[16]. However, for quite some time, Södermark's wife questioned whether the band actually existed or if it was merely an excuse for drinking with his peers.

His music career started at Rytmus High School[17] in Stockholm, Sweden, which offers a panorama of educational programs in singer/songwriter, music production, singing and musical instruments. Rytmus is known for its Clinics where established artists contribute to the musical education of youths. The yearly Live Night musical Festival is another well-known event at Rytmus High School.

Another passion of Södermark is art and several of his drawings have had immense importance in presenting and explaining research results in an appealing way. Several of his drawings are also regularly used in clinical work to illustrate metaphors in Acceptance and commitment therapy and to aid patients in experiential learning.

Another example of Södermark's contributions (top center).

Since his youth, Södermark has been a devoted vegetarian for ethical reasons. He is consistent in his vegan-friendly lifestyle, not only in terms of dietary choices, but also in consumption and when choosing components for his instruments.

Background[edit]

In his younger years, Södermark had an interest in hairy Volvo cars. However, after becoming a father of two, he now indulges in environmentally friendly cars suitable for family life. Many are the unexpected events that have occurred during Södermark's clinical and academic career. The bathtub related incident at a conference hotel and the inadvertent journey to the incorrect San Jose, are two memorable stories often told in loving appreciation of Södermark's rare and much evolved social skills.
