The Surya Mandir of Handiya is very ancient and is believed to be of Dwaparayuga. It is situated in the Nardiganj block of Nawada district and approximately 6 kms south-west of Rajgeer. People worship Surya Narayana here and the temple complex has many ancient statues, which have been damaged with the passage of time. A dip at the nearby pond is mandatory for worship.Constructed at the time of King Jarasandha, it is said his daughter Dhaniya was suffering from leprosy and used to visit this temple daily for worship. As the legend goes, she used to bathe in the nearby pond and was cured. Later Dhaniya established a temple of Ma Bhagwati in a nearby village and a Shivalinga at Dhaniya hill, which is 2 kms away from the main temple. The uniqueness of this Shivalinga is that it contains depiction of Gauri and Shankara simultaneously.

The sanctum of the Bhagwati temple in the village is now 7-8 feet below the normal ground level. It is being renovated and the villagers have made some new constructions to protect it. Here Ma Bhagwati is established in two forms and statues are of black stone. During the reign of Jarasandha, Bhagwati was worshiped every Tuesday. Everyday Dhaniya first worshiped Surya Narayana and then moved to Dhaniya hill to worship Gauri- Shankara. Generally there is virtually no light, so it is with the help of lanterns that devotees find their way through a narrow, bumpy and dusty pathway. While the statue of Surya Narayana is of black stone, the chariot has seven horses attached to it. A small Shivalinga is also there. The main statue was damaged and later a small statue of marble was placed there after certain necessary religious ceremonies for it."The dome of the temple has three kalasha of brass and there is a Surya chakra at the top."
