When he jumped his foot hit the chest of Wichita State's Tekele Cotton. "They said he kicked him above the neck and he intentionally did it," Illinois State coach Dan Muller said after the game. "How Jackie was getting a rebound and intentionally was kicking a moving target? I haven't seen it, but that was the explanation to me." "Anyone who watches me knows I'm not a dirty player," Carmichael said. "I saw the replay. If I was someone who wasn't at the game in our fanbase, I guess I would think it was intentional. I'm looking at it from my point of view, though, and I didn't mean it. I went up for a rebound like I usually do."[9]
