Merry Christmas Oshwah/TalkPageArchives

Hi Oshwah/TalkPageArchives, wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas
and a happy New Year. Thanks for all your contributions to Wikipedia this year and there is already a large number of Christmas wishes before me.
   – Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 10:26, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Iggy the Swan! Thanks for the holiday wishes! I hope that 2020 is an excellent one for you! I'm sure that I'll see you around on Wikipedia (as per usual); until our paths cross again... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:33, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Note: This discussion is revived from an archive

Thanks, you've replied to me during what I've chose to take January off for a break.
While I was hoping to enjoy 2020, on Wikipedia I've missed yet more trolling (e.g. this edit requesting me or another user to move to "Jonathan Field". In fact, out of the unread alerts I've received during the month off, yours was the standout good one. Hope you don't mind me to fix a basepage error, it had "archive..." in my message above. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 11:27, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - No worries; thanks for the response, and welcome back! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:34, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Rollback right requested

Hello, I would like to request rollback rights. I have 2700+ main space edits and have been on Wikipedia since 2006. I've never been blocked or even warned. I believe that I know the difference between vandalism and good faith edits. Thanks for your consideration. Constant314 (talk) 05:14, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Constant314, WP:PERM/R is probably a better place to ask for that. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 05:15, 2 February 2020 (UTC) (talk page watcher)
Thanks. Constant314 (talk) 05:17, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Constant314! I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. As AntiCompositeNumber pointed out above, you can request user rights by adding them to the requests for permissions noticeboard. It'll be much faster and result in a quicker response than asking individual admins on their user talk pages. This noticeboard is patrolled by many admins, and it's always a better idea to go there. Now, I'm not saying this to discourage you from asking an admin for certain user rights; it's certainly not against policy and I'm quite fine with users doing so if they wish. It's just better for you to use the noticeboard, as it's a location where admins can coordinate, perform needed checks, discuss borderline/past requests, and make sure that requests are handled. :-) If I can assist you with anything else, you know where to find me; please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything. ;-) I noticed that your account was granted rollback after you requested it on the permissions noticeboard - congratulations, and keep up the good work! :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:40, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
No problem. Thanks for the response. Constant314 (talk) 19:54, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Constant314 - You bet; always happy to help! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:12, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Template:INTADMINRightPlace

Greetings,

is Template:INTADMINRightPlace supposed to become an edit notice? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:36, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jo-Jo Eumerus! No. If you look at WP:ADMIN, WP:RPC, and other pages - I've designed these templates over the last years in order to help new users out who may be lost. It certainly could be used as an edit notice (after a few tweaks), but that is not the intended design. Let me know if you have any more questions. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:44, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
So it's a substituted template that you post when replying to queries? The reason why I am asking is because it looked unused to me. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:25, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Jo-Jo Eumerus! Sorry for such a delayed response here... You're right; I just discovered that the template is unused right now... LOL. It apparently was removed from the page that I added it to. I've started a talk page discussion with the editor to sort this out - thank you for letting me know about this. :-) No answer your question: No, it is not substituted. It is transcluded onto the Wikipedia page that it's supposed to be visible on. I do not use it in any of my responses to any users or any discussions. Please let me know if you have any more questions or if you're still confused about anything. I'll be more than happy to answer your questions and discuss this with you further. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:33, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. The reason I am asking is that that template is on Wikipedia:Database reports/Unused templates/1, which makes me wonder if there was a problem. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:59, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Jo-Jo Eumerus - Ah! No worries; I was wondering how you ran into this template in the first place, and made you come up with these questions and concerns about it... Now it makes sense. :-) I've started a discussion on the talk page, and assuming things end quickly and no objections are noted, the template will get linked and used and will disappear from that database report once it makes its next query. ;-) Please let me know if I can answer any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:11, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Js page

Hello sir, I was trying to add something in the js page it turn in to a script page. CASSIOPEIA (My CVUA instructor) told me to come to you. Could you fix it? Thanks. P.S my J.S page [1] The4lines (talk) 18:03, 4 February 2020 (UTC)The4lines

Hi The4lines! I apologize for the delay responding to your request for assistance here. I took a look at your common.js page and noticed that you added some code but removed it shortly afterwards. I went ahead and restored the code that you removed so that I can help you further. At first glance, the code seems perfectly okay... Were they not working properly? Did you remember to perform a cache-bypassing page refresh after saving the code? If you have any details that you can respond and elaborate with regarding exactly what you need help with, I'd appreciate it and I'll be happy to help! CASSIOPEIA, I'm pinging you here because it sounds like you have some context on what The4lines is trying to do. If you could provide me with either some context, a link to the relevant discussion, or (even better) both - it would be a big help. :-) I'm sorry about the result of your RFA, by the way... If you remember, my first RFA sunk like the Titanic (and for good reason, too)... Keep your head up! :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:46, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
@The4lines:. Hi Osh - Thank you for the comment on my RfA. Appreciate it. The request for assistance from The4lines is about installing copyvio script see the full conversation at User:CASSIOPEIA/CVUA/The4lines at the end of Assignment 6. Let me know if you need further clarification. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 07:31, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
The4lines, CASSIOPEIA - Perfect, thank you for the context and the link, CASSIOPEIA! Implementing that copyvio script is easy to do, and I've gone ahead and done so for The4lines and on his common.js page. Please let me know if I can help with anything else, and I'll be more than happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:45, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Queue filtering in Huggle

How would I filter Huggle's queue so only edits that are likely to be vandalism show up in it? TK421bsod (talk) 01:07, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi TK421bsod! I apologize for such a late response to your question here... I'll be more than happy to answer your question, explain how Huggle and a few things work, and show you where you can go fix the settings that you're most likely looking to tweak. :-)
Before I can answer your question, I need to first explain how Huggle "determines" which edits are "good" vs which edits are "bad". In fact, Huggle doesn't even make that determination at all. The "good vs bad" (for lack of a better work) of each edit is determined by a back-end service that the Wikimedia Foundation designed, called the Objective Revision Evaluation Service (or ORES for short), that scores each individual edit by the likelihood that they're vandalism, bad-faith disruption, or made with malicious or abusive intent. A higher positive score that ORES assigns to an edit is a higher probability that it is malicious, and vice versa for a lower negative score.
Queue filters in Huggle do not determine if the edits that appear in your queue go through this filter or not, nor do queue filters set the threshold for what edits outside of certain ORES score ranges are discarded. All edits that Huggle evaluates have already been scored by the ORES; Huggle just looks at the score that the edit received in order to determine whether or not it should appear in your queue, and if so - what position. Queue filters in Huggle (that you can create and customize using the Huggle settings) only filters your queue by what Wikipedia namespace the edit was saved to, and other conditions (such as ignoring edits made by a bot, ignoring page creations, etc). If you want to change the threshold in which Huggle will either add the edit to your queue or ignore it completely, and in order to make it stricter, you can do this by modifying the two Huggle settings under the "feed" tab. You'll just tick the checkbox next to the "enable global max score" or the "enable global min score", and then replace the "0" value with the appropriate ORES score that you wish to use as your threshold.
Do be warned: It will take a good amount of tweaking and playing around with on your part in order for you to get those settings right and to the threshold that you're looking for - prepare to spend some time toward testing this setting out. Each edit that you click on and view in Huggle will have its ORES score displayed at the top of the diff window; use that information to get an idea of the scores that ORES gives to different edits and what values you wish to place in those settings. My recommendation is that you go through all of Huggle's settings and make it function the way you want to first, then use the settings to create a custom queue filter second so that you have your queue set up the way that you'd like, then enable and modify those minimum/maximum threshold settings afterwards. It will save you time and will help you to avoid any unexpected confusion as you tweak and change your settings.
Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be more than happy to answer them. I apologize if my response here was longer and more in-depth than you anticipated; it was necessary to explain how things work and to go over the different settings within Huggle for you so that you would have your question completely answered. :-) Good luck with everything, keep up the great work, and you know where to find me if I can help you with anything else - please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:21, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, Oshwah! I'll play around with the settings and try to find what I like best. TK421bsod | talk | my contributions 19:48, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Rollback Request

Hello! Can you look at the contributions of ActualJoe and consider granting rollback rights? I've been helping this user since they joined, and I think rollback would be a helpful addition to their toolset. Thank you! Puddleglum 2.0 04:00, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Puddleglum2.0: I'd suggest telling ActualJoe to request rollback at WP:RFPERM/R. InvalidOS (talk) 14:48, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Puddleglum2.0! Thanks for the message with your request! I'm always happy when I see that an editor is taking time and energy to help build, mentor, and guide another editor on Wikipedia. It's a highly commendable and stand-up act; I thank you and give you my upmost appreciation and respect for doing this. Yeah, as InvalidOS pointed out above, the user can request the rollback (and other user rights) by adding them to the requests for permissions noticeboard. It'll be much faster and result in a quicker response than asking individual admins on their user talk pages. This noticeboard is patrolled by many admins, and it's always a better idea to go there. Now, I'm not saying this to discourage you (or other users) from asking an admin for certain user rights; it's certainly not against policy and I'm quite fine with users doing so if they wish. It's just better for him to use the noticeboard, as it's a location where admins can coordinate, perform needed checks, discuss borderline/past requests, and make sure that requests are handled. :-) If I can assist you with anything else, you know where to find me; please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything. ;-) I noticed that ActualJoe was granted the rollback permissions since it was requested by you on my user talk page here (I assume that you or ActualJoe took the advice given above and requested it on the noticeboard) - congratulations are obviously in order, and I hope that you continue to help and mentor him and encourage him to keep up the good work! :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:58, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Re: Removing an edit I made

Hi Oshwah,

I just received the below message from you:

"Hello, I'm Oshwah. I wanted to let you know that I removed one or more external links you added to Pantanal because they seemed inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thanks. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:47, 17 February 2018 (UTC)"

I actually don't recall editing this page. In fact, I wasn't even aware that the term 'Pantanal' existed until now. I actually haven't even edited any Wikipedia page at all. I live by myself, so it couldn't have been anyone else doing it from my home either. I suspect that someone using my current IP address may have made that change instead. Anyway, no dramas.

Best regards, Ruki 220.240.108.32 (talk) 10:35, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) He posted this warning two years ago, in 2018. Anyways, if don't want to receive messages not meant for you, I'd recommend creating an account. InvalidOS (talk) 13:54, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi there! See the response above (thank you, InvalidOS!); IP addresses change and can be shared by more than one person (such as a public WiFi). A side effect on Wikipedia regarding this is the fact that warnings left on your user talk page that are old and/or not meant for you are often a subject of confusion - just ignore it. In order to avoid this confusion, you should consider creating and using an account in order to edit on Wikipedia. It will resolve this issue, as well as provide you with many other benefits. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:03, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Bettina Arndt

Hi, maybe Bettina Arndt needs permanent page protection. You did it last time I think. As soon as the temp block was lifted, new SPA editors are established to vandalise. Thanks, CatCafe (talk) 20:43, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi CatCafe! Oh boy... I definitely see what you mean. There appears to be a lot of editing going on between yourself, Quizical, and Traceybrow on this article over the last 5 days. I think that when you said "permanent page protection" above, you meant to say full page protection. Have you discussed the issues and possible dispute with Quizical and Traceybrow on the article's talk page? What's this all about? Quizical and Traceybrow - You're also welcome to respond and add input here; I just want to know the context of everything so that (if applicable) we can start working toward properly resolving things. :-) Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:10, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Bethlehem College & Seminary Page Deletion

Hello,

I am the Communications Manager at Bethlehem College & Seminary. Our "Bethlehem College & Seminary" page draft was deleted under the category of "G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion," and I am unsure why. We are aiming to just have a basic informational page up, similar to other schools. Can you please reverse the deletion and help me understand why it was categorized as such?

Thanks!

Leah Leah.bruneau (talk) 21:01, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

Leah.bruneau, To start, you would be best off if you properly followed the disclosure requirements at WP:PAID. This is a ToU requirement. Once that's done, please review the policy on tone, which is probably what got it deleted. --—moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 21:06, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Leah.bruneau! Thank you for leaving me a message here regarding the draft page that you created and that was subsequently deleted. I'll be happy to explain Wikipedia's policies and point you in the right direction. The draft page you created was deleted under G11 of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria for being blatantly worded or created to be an advertisement or promotion. The typical habits, patterns, and behaviors that are looked for when determining whether or not a page is eligible for speedy deletion under G11 is outlined and explained in-depth on this Wikipedia essay. The page you created exhibited many of these issues (including the fact that the majority of the text was worded in a positive manner that was not neutral). I highly recommend that you read Wikipedia's policy on advertising or means of promotion, and that you also review Wikipedia's policies on paid editing and conflict of interest, and make sure that you are in compliance with both policies and guidelines (as Moonythedwarf pointed out above). Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:32, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! I've looked these over. However, this is our basic, trimmed-down institutional history and mission statement. Both are phrased neutrally. The rest of the content was a bulleted listing of offered degrees and notable alumni, without saying anything about them. I understand the category of deletion; the content I posted just does not apply. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leah.bruneau (talkcontribs) 20:43, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Leah.bruneau - Unfortunately, "mission statements" and content in those areas is not encyclopedic and it's indicative of articles and pages where the intent is to advertise or promote the subject rather than inform. This is part of the reason as to why the page was deleted. Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further. Thanks again for the response, and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:29, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the revision removal

What's the best way to handle this case (meaning the user, the COI, the information, etc.)? --Mr. Vernon (talk) 23:46, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Mr. Vernon! Thank you for leaving me a message here with your questions regarding the line between "COI evidence" and "personal identifiable information" when it comes to adding a case and supporting evidence regarding a user and their conflict of interest with an article subject. This is a line that can be very hard to distinguish at times depending on the situation, and often leads to the unintentional WP:OUTING of other editors and their personal information when one is not careful. Remember that we are not to post the real-life identity, personal information, off-wiki profile, etc of another editor if they did not disclose or share this information themselves. I know that, in this situation, finding this user's information was easy to accomplish due to the fact that they used their real name as their username. Even with this information, we still must be careful and make sure that we don't out them. If there's evidence of COI that cannot be shared as evidence without also sharing the personal information or identity of the editor, the evidence should not be posted on-wiki publicly; instead, you're supposed to email it to paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org so that it can be reviewed privately by appropriately-trained users. I believe that this situation falls into that category; you should submit this evidence privately so that it can be reviewed. Please let me know if you have any more questions or if I can further assist you with clarifying anything, and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks again for the message and for self-reporting your edit for review. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:09, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank for the clarity. --Mr. Vernon (talk) 00:12, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Reply regarding changes in 'Forward Caste" article

Sir, the content that I removed said that "Currently forward castes are only allowed to compete for seats in the unreserved category in educational institutions and central government jobs, regardless of their educational/economical status in society. A significant percentage of the forward caste lives below the poverty line, and more than 30% of the members of this community are illiterate. To meet their aspirations, demands have been raised for providing separate reservations for the poor among forward caste populations. Many political parties like BJP, Samajwadi Party, LJP, Rastriya Janata Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Bahujan Samaj Party[8][9][10][11] have supported proposals for providing a separate reservation for the poor among the forward castes. These parties account for over 400 of the 542 members in the current parliament, as well as holding power in most states in the union." But, in January,2019 a bill has already been passed by the government of India which has provided for 10% reservation for Economically backward sections of the Forward caste. Therefore, the above statements has become outdated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.211.51.1 (talk) 13:19, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! Thank you for responding and for letting me know the reason behind the content removal that you made to the Forward caste article. In the future, it's always best to include an edit summary with your edits to pages. They do exactly what the name states: They summarize exactly what it is that you changed and why. Other editors see these edit summaries on the page history, and while they review and scrutinize diff links and edits. When no edit summary is left, other editors can become confused with exactly what you're trying to do or what your intentions are. Thanks again for the explanation; feel free to modify the article if the information you're modifying is correct or has been changed since the time of its writing. Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:34, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Please review Wikipedia's policies on advertising, spam, and promotion, conflict of interest, and the use of external links, and let me know if you have any questions. Deleting accounts

If it's not possible for an account to be deleted on Wikipedia due to contributions, how does the Wikimedia Foundation comply with the General Data Protection Regulation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.135.43.11 (talk) 17:43, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! Thank you for leaving me a message here with your question. While accounts cannot be deleted on Wikipedia, private metadata and information that's logged in relation to the account (such as IP address information, user agent, and other data) is automatically expunged from the Wikimedia Foundation servers and databases when that information becomes three months old. We also allow for users to vanish if they choose to do so, and we assist with this process so that any concerns are addressed (see the documentation page for information and an explanation). If the user has posted or published information that's deemed to be non-public personal information and wishes for this information to be removed, this can be done with suppression. However, in most cases, if users comply with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and they use their account to make positive contributions to the project, all they would have to do is simply stop using it and there won't be any sensitive information that would need to be deleted in the first place. :-) Other back-end data will simply expire and be removed as time goes by. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:52, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
(This is the same user; I just used a public Wi-Fi network, so I'm on a different IP address.) Apart from revision deletion and suppression, when you vanish on Wikipedia or the other wikis, the contributions are still there; it's just the account is renamed and its associated user page is deleted. However, I think that GDPR requires that the data actually be deleted from the servers, which is more than just suppressing information. How would the Wikimedia Foundation be able to delete all contributions and everything directly connected to the username (including logs) all at once to comply with that regulation? Courtesy vanishing wouldn't help, and it doesn't appear to completely comply with the regulation to me. 2001:569:78BE:4700:3169:5C6B:9D7:CC4 (talk) 03:24, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi there! I think you're correct, but I don't want to answer these kinds of questions or confirm any information - I'm not an expert in this exact subject matter. I did some digging around and was able to locate this page regarding the MediaWiki Software and its compliance with GDPR. I was also informed that a Wikimedia Foundation public-facing email address exists for the purpose of accepting and answering the exact questions that you're asking here - you should email your questions and concerns regarding the MediaWiki Software and GDRP to privacy@wikimedia.org. They will be able to help answer your questions and address any concerns that you may have, and in a much better manner than I possibly could. ;-) Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I'll be happy to try and answer them as best as I can; you should email your questions to the foundation first, and then ask them to me if needed - they will be able to assist you with your concerns much better than I can. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:40, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Did my thanks go through? How do I then make a WikiPedia for myself, or my clients, etc? As in, myself the actual DJ-PM (Percolator-Michael since 1992) Or my artists

Hello,

Thank you for correcting my edits so quickly, it has been a while since I have contributed here, a decade. I should find m y old login info? Says my the percolator page doesn't exist even though I am internationally known, should I just do Michael Klein?

I run multiple endeavors and have clients that maybe are or should have their pages here, as I see other artists such as the one that we are suing (and yes I see how it could be seen as hearsay until the press pick it up - Spring/Early Summer, Michigan courts).

Examples, erase if needed just don't know if these are part of anything or just simply make my clients via imdbpro and such, etc: mazeltovrecords.com whipthatsissy.com @fakethemag (since 2010) google/bing: handsomely homeless linkedin.com/in/kleinthedeal @handsomhomeless (SINCE 2010 whoops caps)

And on and on etc etc

Hi The Percolator! Welcome to Wikipedia! While Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that's open for all to view and edit, it is not a place to advertise or promote, nor is it a place to create articles, pages, and profiles about yourself or the clients you represent. This conflict of interest is widely seen as unacceptable here by the community, and it almost always leads to the user being blocked after repeated issues and warnings. Creating, editing, or even sometimes discussing articles and pages where you have a conflict of interest with the subject creates many problems for the encyclopedia - one of which being that it's nearly impossible for you to write about them to reflect a neutral point of view. I therefore must urge you to not engage in this behavior at all, and instead focus on other articles that you're interested in but have no such conflict of interest. If these article subjects are notable and therefore deserve their own article, someone else will surely write one. It doesn't need to be you. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:59, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for leaving me a message here. Wikipedia is not a social network, nor is it a place to create your own personal article or page with your information. There are several other places that allow you do to this; Wikipedia is not one of them. Nonetheless, I appreciate your message and your explanation. My review, request for assistance.

Hey,

I've just wrote my first article "Layoners" which is in my sandbox. I noticed your review and maybe need some help with it. I followed the example of Hawkers (company) and "Luxxotica".

If I'm correct I was flagged by you for conflict of interest so I wonder if someone can review this article.

Also I have problems inserting image in the right sidebar.

Looking forward to your answer,

best regards,

Gasperb (talk) 12:56, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Gasperb, and welcome to Wikipedia! What exactly made you believe that I flagged you for something such as having a conflict of interest with that subject in your sandbox? Are you still having issues with the infobox image? Let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:17, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Hey Mate!

So I've ditched Microsoft and went on to use Linux, I can't seem to install the Brother DCP-7030 printer driver, also my backspace key seems "loose", does dell warranty/geek squad protection cover keys? --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:02, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Thegooduser! You'll need to see if Brother writes Linux drivers for their printers by visiting their website and looking at the support page for that particular printer. If they don't, you won't be able to use that printer with Linux unless someone writes one. You'll also need to call Dell regarding the loose key. I don't recommend that people try removing and fixing issues with their laptop keyboards on their own (unless they have a high degree of experience with doing so). Laptop keys are complex due to their very small profile, and they're easy to break or make worse if you do something wrong. Laptop keys have a very small range of vertical motion because of how thin laptops need to be; this means that keyboard keys will be easier to mess up compared to normal keyboards on desktop computers. Again, I'd call Dell and get their recommendation. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:22, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Umegbewe Nwebedu! Welcome to Wikipedia! As Chris troutman stated above, writing about yourself or even contributing to articles where you have a conflict of interest with the article subject is behavior that the community heavily frowns upon, and most edits that are found to be exibiting either behavior is usually reverted and removed. Wikipedia is not a social network; it's not a place for creating a profile about yourself and using it for social interaction or other purposes that are not Wikipedia-related. Please review the policies and guidelines I linked you to here, and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be more than happy to help you if you do. :-) Thank you for understanding, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:04, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

HeavenlyBeing, whose sock?

Hi! I hope you do not mind me asking this. Just before you blocked HeavenlyBeing I spent 10-20 minutes on trying to figure out whose sock puppet they are in order to file a SPI. Do you mind sharing the LTA case or master account, so that next time I'll be able to recognize them faster?--Eostrix (talk) 16:53, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Eostrix - I don't know exactly who it is either. Another user pointed out to me that this user is a sock puppet, and they're trying to find out who it is as well... As soon as I figure that information out, I'll respond here and let you know... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:55, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! I concur they are a sockpuppet for sure. The speed they were doing fairly advanced stuff looked like a sock. I tried searching for the ASCII symbols they were using on their talk and user page, but did not get far with that (found an account with 10-20 edits from back in 2017 that was never blocked).--Eostrix (talk) 17:07, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Eostrix - No problem! I suspected the same thing, and another user also pointed them out as a sock user (though they also couldn't think of the master that it belonged to). I still don't have an answer to your original question, but once I do get that answer, I'll be sure to let you know. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:42, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi ‎Msebolt, and welcome to Wikipedia! Please understand that Wikipedia is not about "truth"; content that is added to articles should be attributable to a reliable source that's secondary and independent of the article subject. If the content is being challenged or is likely to be challenged, you must cite a reliable source in-line with the content. Please also know that original research is not allowed on Wikipedia (you cannot cite your own experience, relationships, knowledge, or published research when adding content), and you should avoid editing articles where you have a conflict of interest with the article subject. Instead, I urge you to contribute to articles that interest you but where you don't have such a conflict of interest. Please review the policies and guidelines I've linked you to here, and let me know if you have any questions about them. I'll be more than happy to answer then and help you. :-) Thanks for the message, I appreciate your understanding, and I wish you happy editing. Hi AG Florida, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'll be happy to answer your question and point you to the relevant Wikipedia policy pages so that you can review and understand it fully. Adding external links to your own website, or any website you build, maintain, or have any kind of conflict of interest with, is not allowed. This constitutes spamming and advertising, and is disruptive behavior that can lead to being blocked if repeated despite being asked to stop. External links that should be avoided on Wikipedia are listed here; please review this list and make sure that you don't have any questions. Please do not continue to add external links to your (or other) website if they do not comply with the policies and guidelines I've listed here. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Thank you - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:52, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Oshwah, I did not add link to Wikipedia page, someone else did as a reference along with another site called Roofing Online. I found out about it and checked it out, found out that the link was broken and tried to correct it. That was all. In no way was I trying to spam anything at all nor have a conflict of interest. That is why I reached out for your assistanceAG Florida (talk) 21:59, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
AG Florida - No worries, and thank you for the explanation. From what I saw while patrolling recent changes and reviewing your edit, I thought that you had added an external link to the article. In fact, if you look at this diff link comparing your edit to the article, it looks like you did. Nonetheless, I appreciate you for taking the time to message me and explain. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Thanks again - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:06, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Mr.Moonythedwarf your reason for deleting the "Akata" Wikipedia webpage, that Wikipedia is not a dictionary, is completely invalid. The word "Akata" is an African slang that unfortunately has a negative connotation and misconception. If you were to search other racial charged slangs you will find their respective pages. Hi Hurikano national! All edits and changes made to Wikipedia need to comply with all policies and guidelines, (and most importantly, our founding principles) - you can't just add anything you want to any article and expect them to be accepted if they don't follow the rules. ;-) Your edits have not been worded to reflect a neutral point of view and have been disruptive by repeatedly adding your changes back after another editor raised concerns and removed them. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:51, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a place for advertising or promotion, and users who create these pages or add this kind of content to Wikipedia risk being blocked for repeatedly violating this policy. Instead, you should focus on contributing to articles and areas that interest you and where you don't have a conflict of interest with the subject. Hi there! Unfortunately, this content involves a living person, and reliable sources are required when adding any kind of contentious or controversial information to an article about a living (or recently-deceased) person. A facebook link is typically not accepted for edits like this, as accounts can be hacked and untrue information posted to them. We need to use secondary sources that are reliable and independent of the subject. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them and help you further. Hi Oshwah,

Can you explain what I have done wrong so I can be set straight?

Will I get my work bacK?

Cheers John (John Lindsay Robert Guest (talk) 07:00, 21 February 2020 (UTC))

Hi John Lindsay Robert Guest! Thank you for leaving me a message here regarding the page you created that was subsequently deleted. I'll be happy to explain Wikipedia's policies and point you in the right direction. The user page you created was deleted under G11 of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria for being blatantly worded or created to be an advertisement or promotion about yourself. The typical habits, patterns, and behaviors that are looked for when determining whether or not a page is eligible for speedy deletion under G11 is outlined and explained in-depth on this Wikipedia essay. The page you created was outlined and formatted in a manner similar to a resume or profile page about yourself, which is why it was deleted under the criterion. I highly recommend that you read Wikipedia's policy on advertising or means of promotion and what things are not allowed on user pages, as these pages will explain things more in-depth and answer any questions you may have. I would also recommend that you also review Wikipedia's policies on paid editing and conflict of interest, and make sure that you understand them and will edit Wikipedia in compliance with both policies and guidelines. Please let me know if you have any questions after reading through the pages I linked you to, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:22, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Fake ban messages

Hi. Maybe I’m being too suspicious, but the content of user:DarkDan123/sandbox seems a bit off. Especially considering the user has only two edits to date. Would you mind having a peek? Thanks. Kleuske (talk) 02:25, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Kleuske! Thanks for leaving me a message regarding this user. I agree that their first edits to their sandbox seem suspicious, given the fact that they were adding sock puppet templates to it. Since then, it appears that this user hasn't made any further edits. Lets just keep an eye on it over the next few days, and if the user's edits and activity continues to be completely dead, we can call the account stale and move on. Please let me know if any further suspicious edits resume on this account and I'll be happy to take another look. Thanks again for letting me know about it. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:26, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Layoners article review

Hello once again,

I am sorry, it was the first time I used this interface and missunderstood the information. My apologies!

Thank you for your offer, I managed to fix the issue with image in the infobox.

I think the article Layoners in my sandbox is now ready for review and publication, but I can't find the "Submit your draft for review!" button. Perhaps you can help me with that?

Kind regards,

Gasperb (talk) 08:12, 24 February 2020 (UTC)GasperB

Hi Gasperb! I'll be more than happy to help you! All of the instructions regarding page and draft submissions for review can be viewed on the articles for creation page. In this case, we were missing a template that contained the button you were looking for; I went ahead and added the correct template for you and moved the page from your sandbox and to Draft:Layoners. You're all set! All you need to do is wait for a user to review your submission. Please note that this will take some time (up to a few months), as there are many thousands of drafts waiting in line for review - patience will be absolutely key here. Not to worry, it will get reviewed... It just might be waiting for awhile before it does. ;-) Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them and help you further. Good luck! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:36, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Nthep! I took a look and applied a 2-week range block on 157.40.0.0/17. I'm hoping that this will put an end to the repeated disruption, but only time will tell. User rights

Hello Oshwah,
I've been busy with college and vacation and haven't been editing as much as I used to. I originally signed up to be a trainer at CVUA, but then decided real life got in the way of doing that so I removed myself. I am a bit worried that my user rights will be taken away if I don't use them for a while. My question to you is can I get my user rights taken away if I don't use them? I don't want to be accused of hat collecting and that's part of the reason I don't ask for user rights that often. I hope you'll understand my question and please ping me in your response. Let me know if I can clarify anything. Interstellarity (talk) 23:19, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Interstellarity! The only user rights that I know will typically get removed from an account after a period of non-use of the tools (this is different from account inactivity), per their activity requirements and individual policies, are the account creator (due to inactivity suspension at ACC), IP block exempt (if the user is no longer hitting any hard IP address block issues or if the user right is otherwise no longer needed - see here for details), interface administrator (if the tools go unused for over 6 months), and the checkuser and oversight user rights (if they go unused per their activity requirements). Other user rights can be removed if your account "goes idle" (meaning that it has made no edits or other logged actions at all) for over a certain period of time. These user rights include the user groups I listed above (since account inactivity would also imply non-use of the tool as well), as well as the administrator, edit filter helper, new page reviewer, and bureaucrat user rights. There might be more that I didn't mention, but those are the ones that I know have either tool use activity requirements, account activity requirements, or both. Other than that, I wouldn't expect that your user rights would be removed just because your level of activity on Wikipedia has significantly decreased. If any are removed, and you find that you're in need of them in order to perform your duties, just re-request it at WP:PERM... I currently hold AFC reviewer, IP exempt, NPR, PCR, and Rollback rights. You didn't mention whether AFC, PCR, and R rights require an activity period. Anyway, It's probably something I shouldn't worry about too much. I'll just focus on my schoolwork and thank you for putting a positive spin to my message. It really helps a lot. Interstellarity (talk) 00:28, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Interstellarity - I don't believe that the pending changes reviewer or the rollback user rights require a minimum level of use or account activity in order for you to maintain having them. The new page reviewer and IP block exempt user rights (as detailed in my previous response above) do have requirements pertaining to use or activity, but those requirements are quite reasonable and can be easily re-granted if you were to have them removed and you later find that you need them back. While some of these user rights have requirements regarding minimum activity or use stated on their policy pages, I can tell you that many of them aren't heavily enforced to-the-letter. I haven't observed that there are administrators who actively remove some of those rights from accounts if they don't meet the requirements stated on their policy page. The account creator, IP block exempt, administrator, bureaucrat, interface administrator, checkuser, and oversight user rights are actively monitored in regards to activity and/or use requirements, and those who don't meet them will have the rights removed - this is done in order to maintain project and website security. However, I haven't noticed that the same level of scrutiny exists with the other user right (though I could be wrong). You're welcome; I'm always happy to help, and I'm always willing to do what's needed to help benefit the project! Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:16, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

/* External links */ Added online calculator

Hi Oshwah,

article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_ratio regarding adding link to online calculator: https://aiolux.com/tools/sharpe-ratio-calculator

I wanted to read the Wiki policy on external links before I replied to this.

I believe the link I provided would be very useful/educational for anyone reading the article on the Sharpe Ratio because this is only online example of how Sharpe ratio is instantly calculated for any portfolio of multiple stocks in the cloud. All OTHER examples available on the internet generally require an excel template and financial data to be downloaded or it is just a formula based presentation.

I would like to understand your specific concerns here.

regards, 207.181.206.42 (talk) 00:48, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Biz — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.181.206.42 (talk) 00:44, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here regarding the edit you made here to Sharpe ratio. I had concerns regarding the origin of this external link, mostly in that it is hosted by a company looking to advertise and provide services. I also believed that the other external links that were currently listed on the article were sufficient and closely-related to the one you added, making it unnecessary and redundant. These were the main reasons as to why I reverted your edit and removed the external link from the article. Please let me know if you have any more questions or if you wish to discuss this matter further, and I'll be more than happy to help you further, answer any questions, or discuss the matter with you in more detail. :-) Thanks for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. Please ignore 1 revision, restore 2 revisions, and restore 2 words erroneously deleted

Hello, Oshwah. Pertaining to edits I contributed under the IP address [REDACTED - Oshwah], I received from you the following message:

Hello, I'm Oshwah. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to Stop-and-frisk in New York City seemed less than neutral to me, so I removed it for now. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:14, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

I wish to drop one of the edits but have the others restored. I'll explain, but first, here is the URL to the pertinent diff page: [3].

I made three edits, only one of which I think raises an issue of neutrality. This is the sentence I edited:

Stop-and-frisk became an issue in the 2016 presidential election, with Donald Trump attributing a nonexistent increase in murders in New York to the reduction of stop-and-frisk.[50]

I added the adverb "falsely" before "attributing." I can surely see how folks will argue the point, and indeed I sense that the phrase "nonexistent increase" represents the vitriol. I shall gladly let that go, for that edit is not important to me.

The edits that I aver do not raise neutrality concerns are to this sentence, which is the sentence published currently:

In the cases of Terry v. Ohio, Sibron v. New York, and Peters v. New York, the Supreme Court granted limited approval in 1968 to frisks conducted by officers lacking probable cause for an arrest in order to search for weapons if the officer believes the subject to be dangerous. The Court's decision made suspicion of danger to an officer grounds for a "reasonable search."[8]

I changed the word "believes" to "suspects" and added the word "presently" before "dangerous." Please note, prior to my edits the phrase actually stated " ... if the officer believes the subject to be armed and dangerous." Again, I added "presently" before "dangerous." As you see now, the words "armed and" have also been removed. This makes the entry seriously mistaken, which can be shown by comparing the sentence to the footnote [8] law review article cited as authority for the sentence.

The first issue is which of these verbs is correct: "believes" or "suspects"? The following quote is from the footnoted law review article cited as authority:

PART III: THE DECISION In the majority opinion in Terry, Chief Justice Warren initially framed the controversy presenting the two competing global views on stop and frisk: that “the police should be allowed to `stop' a person and detain him briefly for questioning upon suspicion that he may be connected with criminal activity,”91

Note: The phrase " ... upon suspicion that he may be connected with criminal activity,"91 does not support the word "believes," and restoring the revision "suspects" comports with the law review article cited in footnote [8].

The second issue is whether the adverb "presently" must be inserted before the adjective "dangerous." The following quote is from the footnoted law review article cited as authority:

107 See, e.g., Terry, 392 U.S. at 30. We merely hold today that where a police officer observes unusual conduct which leads him reasonably to conclude in light of his experience that criminal activity may be afoot and that the persons with whom he is dealing may be armed and presently dangerous, ....

Note: The phrase " ... that the persons with whom he is dealing may be armed and presently dangerous, ... " shows that restoring the revision inserting the adverb "presently" before "dangerous" comports with the law review article cited in footnote [8].

The third issue is whether the words "armed and" should not have been deleted along with my addition of the word "presently." The following quote (the same quote as above) is from the footnoted law review article cited as authority:

107 See, e.g., Terry, 392 U.S. at 30. We merely hold today that where a police officer observes unusual conduct which leads him reasonably to conclude in light of his experience that criminal activity may be afoot and that the persons with whom he is dealing may be armed and presently dangerous, ....

Note: The phrase " ... that the persons with whom he is dealing may be armed and presently dangerous, ... " indicates that the erroneous deletion of the words "armed and" does not comport with the law review article cited in footnote [8], and thus the two words "armed as" should be restored.

I appreciate your kindness and assistance. Please let me know if I can assist further. Thank you, Pizztov. Pizztov (talk) 00:52, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Pizztov! I went ahead and suppressed your IP information from those edits to the Stop-and-frisk in New York City article (as well as your message above on this page), since you now have an account and would likely want this information to be removed. :-) I agree with you that the only edit that needed fixing was the last revision you saved where "falsely" was added to the article; the other changes that you made in the edit immediately prior seems to be okay. Unfortunately, there have been edits and changes made to the article by other editors since, which means that I cannot simply restore your other changes without removing the newer revisions and changes that other editors have saved. The best thing to do in this situation is to simply have you manually add those other changes back to the article. I wish there was a more simple way to accomplish this, but newer revisions and changes have left us with little options. Please let me know if you need any more assistance or if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be more than happy to help you further. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing! :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:53, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Dell

Is ubuntu safe from viruses? I don't have an antivirus --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 02:59, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Thegooduser - No Operating System is completely 100% safe from viruses, malware, or other malicious programs, exploits, or attacks... However, I can say that Ubuntu is significantly far less of a target for viruses, malware, etc compared to Windows or even MacOS (which uses custom Unix libraries and code under the hood). This is due to the fact that users who run Ubuntu make a very small percentage of computers compared to Windows or MacOS. People who want to write malicious software, exploits, or programs are far more likely to target users who are running Windows or another popular Operating System, since more computers use them and hence more potential victims exist that the malicious software can exploit or infect. Are there viruses and malware out there that are specific to Ubuntu and can cause it to have a very bad day if it were to be downloaded and executed? Of course there are. There are just significantly less of them in existence due to the fact that, compared to Windows or other Operating Systems, Ubuntu makes up a tiny percentage of users who use it, hence it'll usually be seen as "small fry" and/or "a waste of time" for someone to spend time writing malicious exploits or programs for. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:15, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Is there a Norton for the Ubnutu? (Bad Grammer on poupouse) lol --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:18, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Thegooduser - No. Symantec only makes antivirus software for the Windows Operating System (as far as I know). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:20, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Linux Haters lol Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:21, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Thegooduser - Well, I mean... You have to think of it in the same manner as I explained above - since Ubuntu or Linux users make such a tiny percentage of Operating Systems that consumers use on their computers, just like writing viruses and malicious code would be seen as "small fry" and "a waste of time" to exploiters, so too would the idea and concept of spending significant time and resources toward developing antivirus software for Linux be to antivirus and protection software companies... Not only are you spending a huge amount of company time, resources, and money toward the software development, marketing, and distribution of such software, that company would also have to continuously invest time, money, and resources toward research, development, and implementation of updates for that software. You'll need to pay a team of professionals and developers to locate new viruses that are written for Linux, and make sure that those new viruses will be identified and removed by this antivirus by releasing new definition updates and as soon as possible in order to protect users and maintain a good reputation. You also have to pay a team of developers to make sure that your antivirus software can't be exploited, damaged, disabled, broken, or removed by viruses or malicious software, either (and release software updates and patches once new exploits and methods of breaking your antivirus are discovered). All these resources and expenses... spent toward developing, selling, and maintaining an antivirus targeted toward an Operating System that only a mere fraction of consumers use as their Operating System? No way... lol. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:36, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
I was just joking above there :), I know that Norton is not in linux because it's more secure than windows, and like you said no one uses it, only a "dumb" hacker would hack linux, lol, and when they do, I'll just shove the damn usb stick and reinstall ubuntu, takes no more than 10 minutes to do so... I also got no Shit for the hacker to take on my system, so I don't care... Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:40, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Well, I wouldn't say that Linux is more secure than Windows... It's like comparing apples to oranges; they (for the most part) use completely different kernels, system files, resources, and technologies than one another. If the shoe was on the other foot and if Linux were as popular as Windows and vice versa, you'd likely find just as many viruses, exploits, malware, and other malicious code would exist for Linux and vice versa for Windows. Sure, Linux is a good Operating System and is actively maintained and updated by good communities that keep it secure... very secure. However, it doesn't mean that there wouldn't be as many viruses, malware, etc in existence that targets Linux compared to Windows if people spent the same amount of time and resources toward exploiting it as well. It's exploited less because less people use it, hence less people write exploits for it, and so on... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:47, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Can Windows 10 be installed with no product key? And why can't virtualbox work on my ubuntu? Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:22, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Typically, yes you can, but (depending on the version and edition of Windows 10 you install) it will continuously prompt you to enter a key and activate Windows, and it'll restrict you from accessing certain features and options until you do so (an example being the customization settings for Windows 10). If you don't care about that, then you won't have any problems... at least for the time being. I wouldn't know why VirtualBox wouldn't be working on your machine. Try searching your particular error or issue on Google or another search engine to find a solution... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:39, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Why does mac not get as much malware? Apples to Oranges : Oshwah vs Vandal Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:50, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

That "fact" can be argued more and more as MacOS becomes more popular to users around the world. That debate aside (and assuming this is true), it's the same exact reason as I explained above for Linux users... MacOS makes up a smaller percentage of users compared to Windows (I haven't seen the current market share, but I'm sure it's becoming less significant of a difference), hence people will tend to focus their efforts on exploiting as many computers as possible with their creations, and will likely try to target users running Windows. Over the years, MacOS has become an Operating System that's significant in popularity and that has a large percentage of overall users who run it. As the popularity for MacOS has increased over the years, so too have the number of viruses and exploits created specifically for MacOS. Unlike Ubuntu or other Linux Operating Systems, many (if not most) protection software companies currently develop, sell, distribute, and maintain a version of their antivirus software for MacOS. This (again) is due to its increasing and significant market share among consumers, as well as the incentive for people to create malicious software and exploits for MacOS that increase alongside it. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:15, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here regarding your edit to Betsy Byars. Sorry, but you cannot "cite yourself" as a reference when editing articles or changing its content. This is known as adding original research to articles, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. In short, you cannot cite yourself, your personal relationships, knowledge, experience, interactions, or even your own references or published works as references on Wikipedia. You must instead cite reliable sources that are secondary and independent of the subject, and that have been researched, written, and published by someone else. This article is also a biography of a living person (often referred to as a "BLP", for short), which undergo more strict and intense review and scrutiny regarding any changes made or content that is added to them - especially if the content is potentially contentious, controversial, or negative in nature. Content that is added or changed on any BLP articles must cite and reference a reliable source per Wikipedia's policy (which you can review by clicking here). Failure to do this is a serious violation of Wikipedia policy depending on the nature, intent, and level of controversy with the content being added or changed, and repeated violations of this policy will usually result in being blocked from editing. Furthermore, since you claim to be a close relative of the article subject, you have an obvious conflict of interest issue here as well. Editing articles where you have a conflict of interest with the subject is highly frowned upon by the community, and usually results in those changes being removed from the article. I encourage you to focus your time and effort toward editing, expanding, and improving articles that interest you but where no such conflict exists. This assures that all content is written and worded to reflect a neutral point of view, and is written to the highest quality possible. I appreciate the message, and I hope that you understand why your edit was reverted and why it has so many issues. Thank you. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:30, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

RMCD Bot

Is there any particular way to stop this bot on posting vandal move requests on certain article e.g. Matthew Lowton - occasionally it does that through IP vandals when reverters do not act quickly enough. I've also asked a similar question on the bot's talk page, aware that bots cannot answer me. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 15:07, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Iggy the Swan! I would ask the bot's operator, Wbm1058, how easy this might be to implement (if at all). My first thoughts would be to either add conditions to the code so that the bot would ignore move requests by anonymous users or unconfirmed accounts altogether, or (perhaps better) have it ignore requests made by any user with less than a certain amount of edits (though, if I recall correctly, the built-in variable that returns edit count always returns 'null' for IP users, but I could be wrong...). It could also be as simple as having the bot just hold off on responding to move requests by anonymous users or unconfirmed accounts until after a certain amount of time has elapsed since the request's creation and with the assumption that the discussion hasn't been removed. Again, Wbm1058 would be able to answer this question much better than I, as he/she has experience with the bot and its code... :-) I've pinged Wbm1058 to this discussion, and I'll defer your question his/her direction... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:35, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Anonymous IP addresses are not as trustworthy as sensible autoconfirmed + above level users like you and I. A longer duration from anon/new user requests would be a good way to strengthen the procedure of having the bot to ensure that it will avoid posting vandal requests quicker than a page watcher reverting. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 15:42, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for putting this on my radar. I'll see what I can do, but it may be a while before I implement any changes. wbm1058 (talk) 16:43, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for blocking Goodplacefreak20. However, I think you should see his comments here and here where he promises to be evade blocks and continuing being disruptive. Hi Drovethrughosts, and thanks for messaging me here regarding your concerns with this user. Before this user created their account, they edited under the IP address range 2604:2000:1303:CB7::/64, and has continued to use that range to perform logged-out editing in order to edit war (see the diffs here and here for an example). If edits continue from this IP range and onto those articles that Goodplacefreak20 is blocked from, I'll just apply the block to the range as well (and any others). If the need presents itself, I'll apply long-term protection to those articles. Either way, any attempts made by Goodplacefreak20 to evade their block will not gain much traction, and will only lead the user straight to an indefinite block. I'm going to leave everything as-is for the time being; lets keep an eye out on those articles, and please let me know as soon as you discover any further disruption - I'll be happy to take care of it. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:51, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi TK421bsod! Great question. In those situations, I'll have Huggle open the article's edit history in my browser so that I can restore the article back to the revision necessary. That's the way that I revert edits by multiple users, at least... I'd definitely give the restorer script that Levivich linked you to above a look, and see if this might be a good solution that you could use... Let me know if you give it a try, and if so - what you think of it. I haven't used that script before, but I'd be curious to see what other users think of it. :-) Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you or provide any more help; I'll be more than happy to do so. :-) Thanks for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing! Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:01, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Levivich, thank you! I'll try the restorer script, and I'll let Oshwah know what I think of it. Have a great day and happy editing! TK421bsod | talk | my contributions 23:35, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

A tool that can watch other user's contributions, and how to prevent abuse.

I put Handyman on stall for a while (mostly because at the time my PC wasn't working well and debugging on a chromebook is painful), and I'm fixing to resume work on it, and thought it may be a good idea to discuss this. One of the functionalities I will probably add is the ability to "flag" users that are not extended confirmed and have their contributions put into one's feed automatically. This, of course, is a pretty dangerous ability (see WP:WIKIHOUNDING), so I was wondering what steps I should take to prevent abuse should I actually release the tool to the wider public.

Of course, the tool can easily have plenty of dangerous abilities ment specifically for handling trouble users (i.e. mass rollback for people with rollback rights) so do keep that in mind when answering. I'd like to try and make the tool decently accessible, but personally I think users should at least have Extended Confirmed to run the tool. Thoughts? (Also, talk page spies are welcome to chime in too) —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 20:58, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi moonythedwarf! The ability to "flag" a user and have their contributions (along with the contributions of other "flagged" users) show up in a special feed of yours is something I've been wanting to have as a feature for quite some time. It would be nice to be able to keep an eye on some users that I suspect are up to absolutely no good, but without having to keep refreshing their contributions page, the edit filter logs page, etc. I wouldn't think of the need to prevent possible abuse of this feature so much as a task that rests upon your shoulders; any semi-automated tool, script, bot, gadget, feature, and function page can be used in an abusive manner and to violate policy. I could fire up Huggle right now and start using it to revert good faith edits instead of vandalism, or use it to abusively revert the edits made by admins if I wanted to. It's not the fault of the development and project teams that are in charge of Huggle's operation and distribution if I were to do this... it's my own damn fault and I'd deserve all of the sanctions, repercussions, and consequences that I'd face as a result. That being said, restricting this tool or feature only to users who are granted a certain user right is the most common way that potential abuse or misuse is avoided. I think that requiring the extended confirmed user right would be a great start. You can test the tool, let users beta test it, receive feedback and ideas from them, and use that feedback to decide if this needs to be changed, left alone, lowered, etc when the time comes. I'd start by implementing this requirement mostly just to have that part of the code developed and working for when the time comes that this actually becomes final. I hope this answers your question, gives you some good input and thoughts, and points you in the right direction. I'm more than happy to help you with any input, thoughts, ideas, anything you need - just let me know. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:13, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Meetboats! Welcome to Wikipedia! Don't worry about the past; if you're truly here to build an encyclopedia, your contributions and your good faith edits will speak loudly, and you'll be fine.
