Hi Osh. I think you have raised an alert over an edit (to the Ben Hackworth page) made from this IP address. I've never edited Wikipedia, and I received this laptop new in 2020. Could this be a mistake? I've donated to Wikipedia before so I don't want to be punted from Wikipedia now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.6.225.252 (talk) 09:54, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! IP addresses change hands frequently. If it wasn't you, don't worry about it and ignore the message. To avoid this issue, consider creating an account instead of editing with your IP address. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:30, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

REVDEL?

A new account has created an attack page about a Kentucky judge accused but not convicted of some stuff. Dawn Gentry is at AfD, and I removed most of the article text per BLP, NOTNEWS, BLP1E, etc. Maybe REVDEL would be overdoing it, but I wanted to see if you or one of your talk page stalkers had a better idea than I have about this. Thanks! Also the new account Moose_Goat could benefit from some wiser person's advice, IMO. HouseOfChange (talk) 14:54, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi HouseOfChange! The page has been deleted. So we're set to go! :-) Have a great day and I wish you happy editing! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:52, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Need help with signature.

Dear Oshwah, I tried changing my Signature style on "Preferences" and looks like I messed up something, I am not so good in HTML, could you help me fix this? I tried navigating through different pages but I am not good in HTML, I wanted to create a unique custom signature for myself but there is an error. This is how my signature looks right now when I try to sign " <b style="color:#070">Angus</b>1986 <span style="color:#00F">TALK'</span> (talk) 06:07, 2 September 2020 (UTC) " Looking forward to getting your help! (I just need any mirror correction in the current signature which would permanently fix this and I can copy-paste this in my preference signature template. Thank you so much for taking your time. :) - Angus1986

Hi Angus1986! It looks like you left a single-quote out of your signature. Try this: <b style="color:#070">Angus</b>1986 <span style="color:#00F">TALK</span> - does this fix your issue? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:50, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
@Oshwah, thank you so much!!!!! It worked, finally, I can resume back. Very grateful for your help. ^_^ Angus1986 TALK 06:04, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello,

I found some untrue information about Mazyar on the existing page. Mazyar is considered a national hero because of his rebellion against the oppression of Abbasid Chaliphate in Iran . You didn’t mention that in fact The Chaliphate were charging very high taxes from the people of Iran and non- Muslim which was called Jaziah. People of Tabaristan supported Maziar’s And Mazyar didn’t convert to Islam and didn’t build mosques because he was a native Zoroastrian. Chaliphate persecuted Zoroastrians and burnt their temples and charged high taxes on them. Please correct these

Parnian001 - You need to go through, review, and understand Wikipedia's policy on neutral point of view. The reason that your edit was reverted was due to your changes not being in compliance with this policy. It is required, and you have to follow it. Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many important walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will familiarize you with our policies and guidelines, how Wikipedia works, how to navigate around the site, and how to find important locations and pages. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:10, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

How do I put one more musical genre in an artist or on a song?

Hello, Oshwah. I don't know so much how to talk English, because this language is not my first language. But I love read Wikipedia (especially in English). And I love this activity so much that I wanted to change the musical genre of a band. So I needed a help of a expert. And when you corrected my error in "It's Now or Never" of Elvis Presley. Well, I discovered that I should ask your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jing74 (talkcontribs) 04:12, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jing74! Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm happy that you decided to join us and help us to improve Wikipedia! So, your edit here wasn't anything you did that was wrong or malicious; it was reverted because you removed brackets from the beginning of a template. Templates on Wikipedia allow us to use one page to write content that can be included on many other pages. So, instead of writing the same content on 100 articles and then having to update each one, I can just use a template and just update that template. If I wanted to, for example, have my user talk page (this exact page) used on 100 different other pages, I can just go to those other pages and write (note the brackets and ) there instead of having to write it again and again. Any changes that are made here would be updated on those 100 other articles; I don't have to go to each one and update them. It saves a lot of time! When you remove the brackets from the start of a template (like what you did in your edit), it breaks that template and results in a mess of text being left behind. This is why I reverted that edit. See this page for more information about how templates work. Since you're new to Wikipedia, you should go through and complete the new user tutorial before you start editing. It will provide you with many important guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will familiarize you with our policies and guidelines, how Wikipedia works, how to navigate around the site, and how to find important locations and pages. It will help you a lot! Please let me know if you have any questions after completing the tutorial or after reading through that template help page - I'll be more than happy to help you! Again, welcome to Wikipedia! I'm so happy that you're here! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:05, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

I need to create a Wikipedia page about a famous football coach in India

Hi Mr Oshwah,

I hope you are doing well.

I tried to create a Wikipedia page named "Francisco Bruto Da Costa". He is a famous football coach in India. However, I saw your deletion of the same stating this is a commercial promotion.

I am new to this and in any case, do not intend to do commercial promotion of any kind.

I am seeking your help so that I can create the page and contribute to Wikipedia in a positive way.

Expecting your guidance on the same.

Thanks & Regards, Abhisek Nandan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhisek.nandan (talkcontribs) 14:06, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

(by talk reader) @Abhisek.nandan: Hi. You don't actually need to write an article about this coach, unless you have a conflict of interest. There are other ways to contribute to Wikipedia and if we wanted to have an article about this coach, we'd've written it. Please read WP:FIRSTARTICLE. Chris Troutman (talk) 14:18, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
I think Chris troutman meant to say, "You don't actually need to write an article about this coach, especially if you have a conflict of interest". The word "unless" makes it mean that you don't need to write an article about this coach, unless you have a COI - then you do need to write an article about this coach. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:37, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

hey, just so we're clear

my edits were not destructive.

Yes, the one to St. Matt's was in fun, but the rest are legitimate.

You may not know, actually, you could not know, that we at St. Peter have a friendly rivalry with St. Matt's.

So, yes, the St. Matt's edit was in fun.

But the others are correct. Linda Meulenbroek is indeed our new principal, Frances Labelle is indeed our new OA, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.148.28.151 (talk) 20:45, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not the place to carry out "friendly rivalries", nor is it a place where disruption and vandalism is tolerated. If you continue to engage in disruptive behavior, you will be blocked from editing. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:48, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Following up on my last message

Oshwah, just so you are clear: I am a teacher at St. Peter CHS. I created basically all the content on our Wiki page, over the past 18 years.

And your deleting of my updates is not only incorrect, it is destructive.

As a staff, we have talked about how to support our students in this new COVID era. One way we sought to do so was to hide 'clues' and 'Easter Eggs' in our school site on Wikipedia, to engage our kids and to foster some sense of togetherness in this 'apart' world. We had an intro plan for our kids for Tuesday.

You have undone that.

So, I guess Congratulations are in order. And yes, I am being ironic.

We have had less than 72 hours to try to come up with at least some fun things for our school. And you have undone them.

Please stop thinking you know the reasons for people editing or creating new content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.148.28.151 (talk) 20:56, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

This is an encyclopedia. We don't hide 'easter eggs' in encyclopedia articles. If you want to do that, do it on your own site. It doesn't matter if you're a teacher, or not. SQLQuery me! 21:02, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Wikipedia is not a place for adding "easter eggs" or "clues", as you state it. This is an encyclopedia, and as a teacher, you should respect that instead of treating Wikipedia like a playground. If you really want to help support your students and garner collaboration and teamwork with them, why not encourage them to create an account, join Wikipedia, and make positive contributions that support our founding principles and help build the encyclopedia? That sounds a lot more productive than what you're doing... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:03, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
And I'll be clear with you: If you make any more disruptive edits, you will be blocked from editing. This is your final warning. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:06, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Hey Oshwah

Just touching base again.

We have had an incredibly ignorant message from a Chris Troutman, and cannot believe what we are reading.

You were very clear, reasonable, and fair, as was the next moderator who wrote to us.

But this guy seems to have a huge ego issue. If he had actually read what we have written, he should never have written what he did.

We're actually sitting here together wondering how in the world that guy became an editor or moderator.

Please pass our concerns on to whomever is his superior.

We totally acknowledge (as we did earlier) that we were in error in using the wiki site to plan an activity for our students.

But now, to receive his message, referring to 'screwing around' with the site, is unjust.

We told you what we were attempting to do. Yes, we were in error. But why is this guy beating us up when we've already replied and noted that we understood where we went wrong?

Your insight would be much appreciated — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.148.28.151 (talk) 00:40, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Don't worry about your past errors... they're in the past. We worked through that and, quite frankly, it's forgotten. :-) You learned from it, and that's what's truly important. Just look ahead and take what you learned and apply it; don't dwell on the past. Chris troutman used a program called Twinkle to revert your edits, and while the warning he left for you was very stern, it was most likely automated and not left by him manually and to threaten a block - though that's what happened due to his use of the tool. This is the unfortunate consequence of using automated tools to fight vandalism. The software reverts the edit, sees which warning you received last time, and plops the next-serious warning on your talk page. That's not fair on you given this situation, but please understand that he probably didn't know what was going on. Like I said earlier - I highly recommend (but don't require) that you do a couple of things: First, create an account. Second, start using that account to edit. Third, go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial immediately after you create your account. It will help you, and it will help you a lot. I started editing here 13 years ago, and there were NO good tutorials on how to get started and edit; you were basically thrown into the boxing pen and you had to figure it out yourself (or be blocked if you couldn't). I'm happy to say that things have changed a lot around here in this regard. That tutorial will get you started and it will help you. So please... please please please... do what I recommend. Create an account, go through that tutorial, and come to me if you have questions. I'm available and more than happy to help you. I want you to be here, and I want you to be apart of this community. Otherwise, I would've just said "meh... he can buzz off". I'm not that kind of person, and I want to help you. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:23, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Editing (2)

Hi Oshwah,

For a long time I have used Wikipedia and donated, but only today have attempted to edit something. As such I had some general questions for you as it relates to editing a page.

When a page is locked, is there a way to suggests a edit? I only ask because I recently read a statement which I found concerning on Wikipedia and the page is locked (I went ahead and started a “talk” thread related to it as I figured that may be a relevant way to start).

Does anyone with an account have the permissions to lock a page? I can see the functionality of this tool and was trying to ascertain more information on how it works. Also if I did not sign this post correctly please let me know, I am trying to understand the nuances of Wikipedia still.

Thank you, JDFE24 (talk) 04:37, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

I'll answer these questions, if you don't mind, Oshwah.
 1. You can request an edit on the talk page of a protected article. Be sure to come with sources to back up the changes you want made.
 2. Only administrators can protect pages, and even then there is a policy in place about when to protect and what level to use: WP:Protection policy. You can request a page be protected or unprotected at WP:Requests for page protection.
Does this help? —A little blue Bori v^_^v Hasteur Hasteur Ha-- oh.... 04:41, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi JDFE24! Welcome to Wikipedia! Jéské Couriano beat me to the punch and answered your questions above. Indignant Flamingo -  Done. In the future, you should email these requests to me instead of posting them here. This talk page is watched by over 1000 accounts; they get notified when edits are made here. When you post requests like this publicly, you will almost certainly trigger the Streisand effect. Users will see the change notification, read your message, and quickly run over to the edit to read the information before they lose the ability to see it... That's obviously no bueno. ;-) You're not in any trouble; I'm just looking out for you is all... Update to the "Shema Yisrael" page

Good Afternoon Oshwah,

It seems that you deleted my update to the "Shema Yisrael" wikipedia page. YOu stated that you thought or it looked like a test. It was not a test, so maybe I did it wrong, but as a Hebrew School teacher (Kitah Dahlet, grade 4) all I wanted to do was add the Hebrew for V'Ahavtah. That's it. If my students wanted to look it up as we learn about it, I wanted them to see the Hebrew. Now they can't/won't. The Hebrew spelling can be found in the Siddur Sim Shalom that we use, or any other.

(talk page watcher) Hi, thank you for your contributions. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia works with sources, not with what users think or know. American English

Hi Oshwah, could you look at possible semi-protection for American English? We've had at least 3 separate IPs from different locations in England making the same types of deletions in the past several weeks. One IP (the second) opened a discussion on the talk page, but meanwhile a third IP has shown up to delete the same material. The thing is, there is an editor who. It violates the rule of the three reversions (3RR), the editing war (BRD) and acts of vandalism, as if the Wikipedia were your private home where you can do what you want. His name is Akerbeltz. Enter the Basque Mythology page, look at the history and you will see what is happening. This person makes fun of everything and does not admit as a reference a book and author that is as a reference in the national libraries and universities of the world: National Library of Spain, National Library of Germany, National Library of Albania, National Library of Russia, National Library of Japan, Royal Academy of the Basque Language, University of Barcelona and a long etc. Please do something and fix it. He acts like a tyrant with no respect for people and no respect for Wikipedia rules.--Edgeblack (talk) 19:08, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

I forgot to tell you. Like the editor (Akerbeltz), the administrator always gets his way, as the other administrators always act on his side to protect him. You know he uses that "my friends' friends are my friends" and here, as in politics, he pulls and uses those friends to do whatever he wants. Many people have denounced him and nothing is ever achieved, so it is normal for him to believe that Wikipedia is his home and he does what he wants. Now, for example, you have already managed to make the reversion in your favor and protect the page. Those new to wikipedia like me who have no privileges, no friends, and on top of that we don't know and can't do those things, we always lose and the only option we have is to withdraw from Wikipedia. It's not fair. Greetings and thanks. Here as in real life the same people always win.--Edgeblack (talk) 19:26, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
(by talk reader) @Edgeblack: Rather than continue to edit war, why not discuss on the talk page? Wikipedia relies upon reliable sources and the consensus of editors. You don't need to blame Akerbeltz as if the community is just doing him a favor because he's an established editor and you're new. While we're on the subject, why wouldn't we favor our established editors? This encyclopedia exists because of editors who write articles year after year, not the drive-by folks who don't like what they see. How would Wikipedia, as an institution, continue to function if we buy your sob-story about how unfair it is to you, the editor posting what looks like spam? Don't you think we find your behavior offensive, making this noise about favoritism? If your goal was to gain pity, maybe consider how many thousands of editors cry tears annually over their inability to get their way. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:15, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
Edgeblack - I understand that you're frustrated, but continuing to edit war, pointing fingers, and accusing other editors of treating Wikipedia as their "private home", and saying that they "make fun of everything" isn't helping your case at all. It also doesn't help when you point fingers at the administrator and automatically say that they "always get [their] way", and that he/she recruits friends to come to their defense to smother an editing dispute. Administrators are senior-level editors who are trusted by the community to set the example and not to use their tools where they are involved. Did you cite the book properly? Just because it's a book doesn't make it reliable. There are many people who publish books; that doesn't mean that the information within it is automatically true and correct. Don't combat what you believe to be "politics" with politics. You know how to resolve disputes properly; you need to do so. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:50, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Mitchellhobbs! It's nice to see you again as well! Thank you for the kind words! When it comes to discretionary sanctions, I felt that 2 weeks of semi protection on those articles was the right thing to do. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:52, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Protection

Hello, you've taken care of lots of protection requests, so I'm asking you if you could take care of this too: Wikipedia:Requests for page protection#Dredg. 151.21.72.247 (talk) 09:27, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! This request has been declined by Woody. Unfortunately, this is where the case must be closed. Unless you have a reason for me to look into it despite the fact that he did so? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:08, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Hello, I've read just now your reply, I'd already written a message in Woody's talk page, I'm telling you the same things I told him. There're lots of different IPs who continue disrupting the page since months. Even if it's true this disruption doesn't happen multiple times a day, during the last months the only edits in that page were vandalisms and rollbacks, and the anonymous vandal has been using very different IP ranges. If that page isn't protected he'll continue doing the same thing using new IPs. This should be a sufficient reason to semiprotect the page in my opinion, I hope that you'll concur with it. 151.21.72.247 (talk) 11:22, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Re-file for page protection and ask for pending changes protection. I didn't think that the article needed either, but you'll have a better case if you ask for this rather than semi protection. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:20, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your suggestion! Where exactly should I request for pending revision protection? The page you've linked there isn't used foru such requests... Well, if I ask you what you told me where you'll tell me, will you change the protection level yourself? 151.21.83.222 (talk) 17:54, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
You can request it on the same page you requested semi-protection - here. :-) To be clear: I don't think this article qualifies for pending changes protection, but I figured you could still request it, and I'll let another administrator review it. This request will be more likely to be considered compared to semi protection. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:03, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Got it, I'll try following your advice, thanks again! 151.21.83.222 (talk) 18:12, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Again, I'm not promising anything. I'm just helping you to make a better case than your previous one. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:15, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

No subject

Hello, I'm back for another reason regarding the same issue. You're a longtime admin, I thought that you could give me some good advice about this situation.

 1. A cross-wiki vandal, probably an LTA, has been disrupting for over a year the page Dredg and other similar pages, both here and in other wikis.
 2. The vandal must Italian because he's been using Italian IP ranges starting with 151, included mine which starts with 151.21, but not only mine.
 3. After the latest vandalism, the user who reverted him last week asked to protect the page.
 4. An admin, Ohnoitsjamie, has declined the request and, instead, blocked the most recent IP range used by the vandal, 151.21.0.0/16, which is mine too.
 5. When I noticed that there was a partial block on my IP range I asked for an unblock, because I'm not that vandal and because the better solution to counter the vandal is protecting the page instead of blocking a single IP range and other single IPs, but the request was rejected.
 6. Meanwhile, the vandal has continued creating disruption in the same page from different IP ranges, even yesterday too.
 7. I asked to protect it in the RFPP page but this request was rejected too, as you know.
 8. Today I followed your suggestion and asked that particular type of protection, another admin granted the request.
 9. Guess what: Ohnoitsjamie unprotected the page and modified my IP range block to prevent me from asking for more requests (he'd already increased the block from 6 months to 2 years after my first request, even if there was no reason because my IP range was already prevented from editing that page and because no further disruption has been created from this IP range since then).

Now I'm going to speak frankly. I don't think that Ohnoitsjamie's behavior has been correct since the beginning, he's been interfering even after the page had been protected even if he had no reason to do it, and to me it looks like he's more interested in frustrating me than in the sake of the project (why on earth unprotecting a page which continues being disrupted by new and new IPs?!). But I know he isn't the owner of Wikipedia, he's one admin among hundreds. His way to deal with this issue is "his" way, not everybody else would have acted in the same way as him. The advice I'm asking you is this: what can I do to have a fair judgement about this story, to have my name cleared (for him I'm still the vandal who did this and this and all the other similar vandalisms just because one of his IP ranges matches with mine), to have my IP range unblocked and that page protected? I hate the vandal who caused all this to me, so you can imagine how being accused to be him and have to undergo the same punishment as him screws me up. I'm not the vandal, would I ever ask to protect that page from all anonymous if I were the vandal who keeps switching IPs? Ohnoitsjamie is as human as us, he isn't infallible, I'm sure he's a good person but in this case he got wrong and he's persisting in his error. I'd like to be freed from his error, do you have any advice to help me succeed or there's no way this error can be reviewed and remedied? 151.21.66.141 (talk) 18:12, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

This is tedious forum-shopping carried over from here. This user seems to be upset that the partial range blocks that only affect them have not been expanded to full semi-protection, for reasons that are beyond me. It's quite obvious it's the same person (all ranges geolocate to the same region of Italy); I can't imagine how an "innocent" user from the same IP range in Italy would be interested in the editing the page of the same obscure band. I'm very close to upgrading the partial block to a full block. OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:28, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
Ohnoitsjamie - Thanks for the heads up. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:41, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Cards84664 - I've blocked the user for 72 hours for edit warring, and I detailed for the user what he/she needs to do in order to properly resolve the dispute. My resources are deleted.

Hello, I shared a total of 4 information on Medes with sources, but a user after me deleted them each time.Unfortunately I deleted 2 sources by mistake while trying to specify these sources again. For this reason, you perceived my actions as Vandalism. But I was not the one to do the vandalism. Please review. And I want the protection of the Medes page to drop on condition of control. I have resources to share. Resource sharing (talk) 11:51, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Resource sharing! Thanks for the message. Looking at the revision history for the Medes article shows that someone (presumably you?) repeatedly added content to the article that many other users had concerns with. I saw that you started a discussion on the article's talk page. I'm glad you did this, but I recommend that you add more in-depth information and details to your discussion. Describe that you were the IP user (if this is true) that was editing this article over the last days, and describe the information you were adding and why. You should also ping the other editors that reverted your changes, so that they can respond and explain. This will help make sure that any concerns are discussed, worked out, and resolved peacefully and by consensus. If you have any more questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:00, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Edit about the Qanun article

Hello, i just got your message about my addition to the Qanun article. As you know there were this section with notable players and i added another name to the list, you have written that it's inappropriate. Would you please enlighten me why would that be inappropriate?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.105.28.102 (talk) 16:27, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! The reason I reverted your edit was due to the external link that you added with the content. You should instead list the name, and then cite a reference to a source that's reliable. This will resolve the issue as well as contain the information necessary in order to support the content that you're adding. :-) Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:11, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Three strikes for a sock

Hello again. The user I asked you about last month has once again been socking. Now that they're site-banned for WP:3X, is there a notice that should be posted to their talk page or any other procedure to follow? BlackcurrantTea (talk) 17:38, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Technically, WP:3X requires that a user is confirmed socking by a checkuser on three separate occasions for a 3X ban to apply, and this user seems to have only been confirmed once. The other times they were so obvious that it would actually be against policy to check. I suppose that's a loophole in the policy, maybe. To answer the question, there is a |banned switch in the sockpuppeteer template which can be used to indicate when a user is banned for repeated sockpuppetry. For examples of its use see the pages in Category:Wikipedia users banned for repeated sockpuppetry. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:03, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
Ivanvector - I agree that this can be seen as a loophole and potentially problematic. I always thought that with the 3X policy, by spirit, obvious socks that didn't even need Checkuser confirmation could be included in the count. However, I would understand how we could not make this assumption given the specific wording of the policy as it is now. Perhaps we should consider a proposal to amend this policy with that information and see what the community thinks? What are your thoughts? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:05, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
I didn't participate and only kind-of followed the discussion that led to 3X becoming policy, but the close is pretty clear that the community wanted this automatic ban to apply only where technical evidence proved a connection, and not for users suspected/proven of socking on the basis of behavioural evidence alone. I guess this is a feature and not a bug in the policy: users caught socking on multiple occasions are de facto banned by virtue of no admins being willing to unblock them and having to appeal to the community anyway, but users caught socking by technical evidence have the extra complication of being under a checkuser block which has special restrictive appeal procedures. It's not so much about adding sanctions to abusive users, it was specifically proposed to relieve the noticeboards from ban proposals that were obvious, but also has the effect of relieving the same boards of appeals that can't be considered in those venues. If someone were to propose that behaviour-based sock blocks ought to count towards 3X bans I'd probably be neutral on it, there might be something here I haven't thought of but I don't think there's any benefit. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:05, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi Ivanvector! Thank you for the explanation. I remember that discussion somewhat myself, though it's been awhile... Thanks for the information. I also agree that there might be a negative consequence if such a proposal were to pass, though I'm not sure what it may be. As you said, the users are de-facto banned anyways... I guess there's no need to give it too much of a worry. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:30, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you both for the clarification. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 21:49, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Tagging corporate IPs

Hi Oshwah, Special:Contributions/165.156.39.34 geolocates to a corporate ISP, in this case General Electric. How do I tag it with one of those ISP tags or something? There seems to be some COI activity too. Thanks. BilCat (talk) 22:12, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi BilCat! Twinkle will do that for you easily. Just go to the user talk page of the IP address, then go to TW --> Shared IP. Locate the tag you want to place, fill in the details, and voila! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:16, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your answers :)

First of all, thank you for all your answers. The mistake I made was this: The resources I added were deleted every time and the information I wrote was deleted each time. That's why I deleted the resources of the person who unknowingly deleted my articles. For this reason, I was banned.First of all, I want to state that I did this without knowing. My only purpose is to cite a source.Yes, I have more than one source I would like to share all of them. And many of my sources are by historians and scientists. First of all, thank you for your kindness and invite you to watch Medes page. After 2 days, my user page will be over 4 days and I will make a total of 16 edits. As I learned, we can fix semi-locked pages after 4 days and 16 edits. how do I return a page to the old version ? How can I blame the user who deleted my resources, and how can I share the user's name? for example: a user deleted my resources on the Medes page. and I want to change this page to an old version and specify why I edited it. how can I do this ? and how can I specify the user who did it and the reason for doing it ? So I mean, how can I specify this user and their mistake in the page history? Resource sharing (talk) 15:09, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Resource sharing! I believe that you were referring to this past conversation? Unfortunately, I see that you've been blocked for tenacious editing. Uploaded photo for Ifeoma Ajunwa page

HI,

Thanks for leaving me a message. So my main edit to the Ifeoma Ajunwa page was to upload a better photo to which I own the copyright. It seems you deleted that photo? Can you please re-upload thanks? Unflattering photos are unfortunately a gendered issue for women in the public eye. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheOdeka1 (talkcontribs) 16:48, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi TheOdeka1! Thanks for leaving me a message here! The reason that I reverted your edit here to the Ifeoma Ajunwa article wasn't due to the photo you added. It was due to the fact that your edit removed a bunch of other content and information from the infobox without explaining why, such as that person's spouse, occupation, birth place, death place, name, and other data. I see that you attempted to modify the photo as well. Have you reviewed Wikipedia's policies on copyrights and proper image use? We take copyright violations very seriously, and you need to be sure that your uploads and edits are within compliance of policy before you proceed. If the work is really yours, feel free to use it, or feel free to donate it by contacting the Wikipedia volunteer response team by clicking here. Again, I appreciate your message and your good faith attempts at improving the article, but your edit made mistakes by removing content, and I'm concerned that your changes may not be in compliance with Wikipedia's copyright policies. Please review the policy pages that I provided for you here, and please let me know if you have any questions about them. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:01, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Am I allowed to edit my fathers Wikipedia page?

Hello, I am a new Wikipedia user. My father's Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Hairston) is very incomplete and I would like to add to it. I am a retired professor. My still finishing PhD student is running a course at Cornell in which students will create or edit existing Wikipedia pages. She added me as a student so that I could do the training. I have completed the first two training modules and will complete the others before starting, but I want to know if I am allowed to contribute to my father's page, since it might be considered a conflict of interest. I plan to stick to the facts of his life, with references to articles and books that discuss his contributions to ecology. His name was Nelson G. Hairston, Sr. and mine is the same except I'm Jr. The page as it exists was first created by a colleague of mine, Justin Meyer, when my father died in 2008. But he did it more as a place keeper than as something he thought was complete. Indeed for a while, someone had put a photo of me on the page, but that has since been correctly removed. I'd just like to provide the details of his life and contributions to the field of ecology. Please let me know. Many thanks, Nelson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nelson Hairston (talkcontribs) 23:27, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Nelson Hairston! Welcome to Wikipedia! Please accept my apologies for the delay responding to your message here. I've been busy with real life things, and I'm just now catching up with all of the Wikipedia messages, requests, emails, mentions, etc that I received while I was away. :-)
To answer your question: No. It is not advisable to edit the article about your father at all. One of Wikipedia's founding principles and policies derive from the requirement to always write articles and content that is worded to reflect a neutral point of view. If you have a personal conflict of interest with the article subject that you're editing, that conflict will make it nearly impossible to write content neutrally. You obviously wouldn't want me writing or expanding the article about Donald Trump or Joe Biden if I were to know one of them personally and have ties to them, right? :-) It would of course be questionable (and I would be questioned by the community) if I did so! How could I edit either article and write content in a neutral manner if I know one of these people personally and have personal ties with them? :-)
The best thing to do in this situation is to not edit this article at all. If you feel that changes really should be made, you should file an edit request on the article's talk page instead, and provide details as to what should be changed and why. Another editor will review your request and make the edit for you (assuming they find no issues or problems with your edit request). In these situations, it's always best to abstain from any involvement with articles that you have a conflict of interest with, and instead edit articles that interest you but where you don't have these kind of conflicts with. This assures that you maintain a neutral point of view with the content that you're adding, and maintains integrity and quality with the content that you're adding to the encyclopedia. :-)
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia, I apologize for the delay responding to your message here, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:18, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Many thanks for your reply, Oshwah. That's what I expected and why I asked. Best wishes,

Don Lemon

A while back, you put pending changes restrictions on the article for CNN's Don Lemon following a series of disruptive edits. Well, our little disruptive editor is back, and back to his same nonsense. Clearly he's not going to learn the definition of insanity, and intends to persist in his vandalism for the forseeable future. Would you consider restoring the pending change restriction at least until after the U.S. presidential election? I can't see him/her getting bored and going away before then (and probably not even then, given what we are anticipating will be the outcomes). Thank you! ----Dr.Margi 12:52, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Drmargi! I apologize for the delay responding to your message, your concerns, and your request here. Life has been keeping me busy. :-) I see that the article has been semi-protected since your message was left, and it currently remains in effect to this day. I'm glad to see that things have been taken care of. If you have any more concerns, or if you need anything else, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'll be more than happy to help! :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:20, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Oh, no worries. I understand life getting in the way in these crazy days. I wanted to be sure you had a heads up because you'd taken care of it previously, but as you say, it's been taken care of and the silliness has slowed down dramatically. I'll holler if anything occurs, have no doubt. Stay safe and well! ----Dr.Margi 08:01, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Drmargi - I appreciate your kind response and your understanding. Sounds good! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:24, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of edit summery?

Hi, is it possible to remove an edit summery? In the case of this edit, I think it would be necessary under WP:REVDEL. Thank you! NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 11:00, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

NonsensicalSystem - Yes, it's possible, and it has been  Done. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:17, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
NonsensicalSystem - Oh, I forgot to mention this in my response above: In the future, you'll want to email me these kind of requests instead of posting them here where it's public for anyone to read. Over 1000 users have this page on their watchlist, which means that they're notified as soon as anyone posts a message or comment here. Requests like these that are made here will generate the Streisand effect, as users will quickly rush over to view the content that they'll soon lose the ability to view. ;-) No big deal; just wanted to let you know. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:29, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
I will do that in the future. Thank you! NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 09:43, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
NonsensicalSystem - You bet; always happy to lend a hand. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:48, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Ha! I took part in that rush, and exactly that was a way I discovered another summary by the same IP-user which also needed redaction. Thank you for an immediate fix! --CiaPan (talk) 10:17, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
CiaPan - Thanks for keeping Wikipedia clean and free of vandalism and disruption! You bet; I'm always happy to do my part and mop things up that need a bit of "Oshwah polish". ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:21, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Looks like block evasion

Hi Oshwah, Gyeongbuker (talk · contribs) looks like Ec21imc (talk · contribs). I haven't checked yet for copyright violations. Thanks, 2601:188:180:B8E0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 23:47, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
