The San Clemente Dormitory is a public dormitory in the city of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. It is a residential hall of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Origins[edit]

The Dormitory traces its origins to the 16th century, when it was founded by Archbishop Juan de San Clemente in what has become the modern-day Rosalia de Castro High School.[1]

During the Spanish Second Republic, the then Dean of the University, Alejandro Rodríguez Cadarso, arranged the construction of five student dormitories. Due to lack of funds, only three of those were built: Colegios Mayores Fonseca (1963), Rodríguez Cadarso (1940) and San Clemente (1942).

Organization[edit]

This dormitory has 44 double rooms and 24 single rooms. The Dormitory has two libraries, one auditorium, a big multiple-use room, a kitchen, a computer room and a TV room.

This dormitory is overseen by the Vice-Chancellor's Office responsible for the University Community and Social Commitment. This institution appoints the Warden, the Subwarden and is in charge of admission of students. Dormitory Council (Consello Colexial) is in charge of representing members of the Dormitory before the Warden, as well of organising parties. It consists of five members democratically chosen each year.[2]

The Dormitory also allocates scholarships to residents for the organization of certain activities: environmental, library, sports, computer science and sociocultural events.

Cultural Activities[edit]

A Colegio Mayor is traditionally distinguished from a Residencia Universitarial by its cultural activities. Besides the activities organized through scholarships, the San Clemente Culture Association, formed by members of the Dormitory, holds conferences during the month of March. It also administers the "Galician Person of the Year" award, which has recently been received by Ernesto Chao, Avelino Pousa Antelo and Marilar Aleixandre.

San Clemente traditionally has two particular weeks of activities, competitions, dinners and parties each year. These are the Tree Festival in December and Clementine Festivities in April.[2]
