Macro-curriculum (Polish: Makrokierunek) - a course of studies at university colleges, whose programme combines two, or more traditional fields of studies (in human or technical sciences), or in which basics for more than one scientific discipline are taught, giving a student the possibility to choose one of the disciplines later-on as the ultimate diploma curriculum.

The aim for creating macro-curricula is to educate specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge and on the other hand – enabling the choice of a more specialised field of studies, after being introduced to multiple disciplines of science or technology.

Macro-curricula in Poland

Typical examples of macro-curricula are Electronics, Computer Science and Telecommunication (Elektronika, Informatyka i Telekomunikacja), encompassing computer science, control systems engineering, robotics, electronics and telecommunication, offered by Warsaw University of Technology at The Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, or macro-curriculum in humanities, encompassing history, ethnology, archeology, philosophy, Polish and other philologies, cultural and intercultural Studies, pedagogy, psychology, which was meant to be open at The University of Warsaw in 2007 (eventually it runs as Philological-Cultural Studies (Polish: Studia Filologiczno-Kulturoznawcze). At Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice a macro-curriculum for English-speaking students is available, and in Katowice – a macro-curriculum in Computing Science in Industry (“Informatyka Przemysłowa”). The University of Life Sciences in Poznań offers a macro-curriculum in Computer Science and Agroengineering (Informatyka i Agroinżynieria), as well as Ecoenergetics (Ekoenergetyka), and the newly open Gastronomy – the Art of Cooking (Gastronomia – Sztuka Kulinarna) macro-curriculum at The University of Warmia and Mazury (Uniwersytet Warmińsko-Mazurski).

According to instructions of Central Tertiary Education Council (Polish: [Rada Główna Szkolnictwa Wyższego] [1]:

One or more universities can create a macro-curriculum consisting of at least two courses of studies, among which a student chooses one as his basic course. Such macro-curriculum must consist of all general subjects of its basic courses and at least 70% of basic and specialised subjects determined by education standards of basic education course, in dimensions not smaller than determined by these standards. A 1st level macro-curriculum can be organised by faculties that are entitled to run Master’s Degree studies on every course, of which this given macro-curriculum consists. A macro-curriculum at the 2nd level can be organised by faculties entitled to run Master’s Degree studies on every course, upon which the macro-curriculum is based, and additionaly – entitled to run 3rd level (doctoral, i.e. post-graduate) studies.
