Paul B McNulty BE MSc PhD (born 1940) is an Irish Engineer, Food Scientist, Writer and Emeritus Professor of Biosystems and Food Engineering at University College Dublin, Ireland.

Early Life[edit]

Paul B McNulty was born in 1940 in Tuam, Co Galway, Ireland. He was educated in Carlow CBS (1944-48), St Patrick’s National School, Castlebar (1948-52), St Gerald’s College, Castlebar (1952-53) and Dominican College Newbridge (1953-57).

Following a clerkship in the Bank of Ireland (1957-61), he studied Agricultural and Food Engineering at University College Dublin (1961-65) where he was also co-founder and 1st Auditor of Forum, University Society (1963-1964). He was also the founder and 1st Editor of The Anvil (engineering magazine, 1964-1965.) Academic Career[edit]

McNulty has specialized in the application of engineering and food science to the production, processing and marketing of food and food products. To that end, he joined the academic staff in Agricultural Engineering at University College Dublin in 1972. He was appointed to the Chair of Agricultural Engineering in 1979 and was Head of the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (1980-2003) and of its successor, the Department of Biosystems Engineering until his retirement in 2005. During his tenure, the discipline expanded into a world-class research programme underpinned by Irish and EU funding. He has also fostered collaborative teaching and research programmes arising from visitations to cognate disciplines in Ethiopia, Libya and Tanzania.

Since retirement, he has acted as associate Editor of Food and Bioprocess Technology <https://link.springer.com/journal/11947>, a peer-reviewed journal published by Springer, New York (2009-present). He has also extended his intellectual horizon by writing on genealogical and historical issues.

  • Awarded Fulbright Travel Grant to support postgraduate studies in the USA, 1966, 1972.
  • Awarded plaque and cheque for $100 for presenting the best scientific paper in Dairy Manufacturing at 63rd Annual Meeting, American Dairy Science Association, Columbus, Ohio, June 1968.

Community Activities[edit]

In addition to his academic activity, McNulty has authored about one hundred ‘Letters to the Editor,’ from 1984 through 2003 in Irish newspapers, on food-related topics with follow-on articles and radio/TV interviews as published in 2016. Most notable was his influence in persuading the Irish Government in 1984 to extend the remit of its Department of Agriculture to include Food in its portfolio with a view to stimulate the now dynamic Irish Food industry. Also notable was his participation in the Move-the-Mountain movement which persuaded the Irish Government to encourage the World Food Programme <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Food_Programme> to use more efficient measures to alleviate famine. He also contributed to the debates on biotechnology, energy, health and safety, and population growth.
