Dandakarana project[edit]
DANDAKARANYA, a sparsely populated dense forest in the heart of the Indian sub-continent, finds place in Hindu mythology as the abode of Rama, the hero of epic Ramayana, during his 14 – year exile. Covering a stretch of 80,000 square Kms., and extending over three States of the Indian Union, viz., Andhra Pradesh, Odisa and Madhya Pradesh and chattisgarh, this area, though rich in mineral resources and forest wealth, had remained cut off from the mainstream of Indian life due to lack of modern communication facilities.
The Dandakaranya Development Authority was created by the union (central) government in 1958 to assist refugees from Pakistan. It constructed the Bhaskel Dam and Pakhanjore reservoir(kherkatta Dam); woodworking centres at Jagdalpur, Boregaon, and Umerkote; and roads and railways in the refugee resettlement areas, including the Balangir-Kozilum railway project. A factory that mainly produces aircraft engines is located at Sunabeda. The National Mineral Development Corporation works iron ore at Bailadila. Important towns are Jagdalpur, Bhawanipatna, and Koraput.The project was known as Dandakarnanya Project.
Bailadila or ‘hump of an ox’ in the language of the aboriginals – is the name given to the hills about 32 km. in length and about 4 km. in width in Bastar District. Bastar is situated in the Southern of the State of chattisgarh, earlier it was a feudatory state of Central Provinces. The capital town of Bastar is Jagdalpur situated on the Indravati River, 215 km. (136 miles) south of Dhamtari. For a long time Jagdalpur was approachable only by a road link from Raipur and most of the trade took place through this route only.
The Bailadila range of hills was perhaps the most cut-off and remote part of India not connected by roads or other means of communication till 1960. In 1957, it generally took about a week to reach the area from the nearest railhead at Raipur or Visakhapatnam. Numerous streams and rivulets were not bridged for heavy traffic.
Pakhanjore is only connected by the bus route from Durg , Raipur, kanker , Dalli rajra, Jagdalpur, Chandrapur. Apart from this struggling life people are coming forward to study at Durg , Bhilai , and Raipur . Privatization has made Pakhanjore more popular among people
