Dr Qudsia Shaukat Omar was born on November 30, 1929 in Meerut, India to Mr Ayub Ahmed and Mrs. Haseena Begum. She is the founder of Shaukat Omar Memorial Hospital located in Shah Faisal Colony No 3, Karachi, Pakistan. She served as the director of this hospital from its creation in 1960 to 2005 and retired in 2005, thereafter continued to serve as an expert consultant and advisor to this institution.

Education and Early Life She completed her F.Sc from Aligarh Muslim Univeristy, India and MBBS from F.J. Medical College, Lahore in 1954. Following that she completed 1 year of house job from Janki Devi Hospital, Lahore followed by a house job in Civil Hospital, Karachi. She is the eldest of 7 siblings, 4 brothers (Mohammad Pasha, Sultan Pasha, Achan Pasha and Jamal Pasha) and 2 sisters (Taj Safdar and Cheemi). Her nephews/nieces include Dr Amar Safdar, Dr Zeenat Safdar and Ms Lubna Safdar.

She was married on August 5, 1956 to Mr Shaukat Omar who died on August 18, 1956. To commemorate his memory, she decided to build a hospital in his name as a charitable institution to provide free medical services to the poor people of Karachi, Pakistan. Shaukat Omar Hospital was inaugurated on August 30, 1960. The hospital stood on approx 12,000 sq.yds of ground with 32 indoor beds, outdoor dispensary, x-rays and other facilities in a congested area where no medical facility of any kind existed prior to this facility. To ensure smooth running of this hospital, she donated it to Fauji Foundation on June 1979. She declined to accept any salaried position and continued to serve as the the medical director till her retirement in 2005.
