Empty morphemes are morphemes that are present in a word but hold no meaning.

The suffix -al is used to create an adjective form of the lemma for which it is modifying. When breaking down factual; "Fact-" means truth, the "-al" suffix modifies the word to an adjective, but the "-u-" placed between the two morphemes holds no content in itself.
