María Rodríguez Denton, born in Guánica, Puerto Rico in 1909[1], was the first known woman of Puerto Rican descent to become a Navy Officer[2] and the first Hispanic officer in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in World War II. As a communication officer and library assistant at the Cable and Censorship Office in New York City, she forwarded the end of the war message to President Harry S. Truman.[1] [3]

She was admitted to the Puerto Rican Veteran's Hall of Fame (Salón de la Fama del Veterano Puertorriqueño) in 2022.[4]
