User:RayvnEQ/I have no life

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The reason this article needs to be created is because there is currently an article regarding "Get a life," the phrase, as it was used in the 80s and 90s, before Internet. This article is also linked by the allegedly-humourous Wikipedia "guides" on types of Wikipedians and Wikipedia-editing addiction, under the area stating that "Wikipedians need to get a life". However, linking to the article I just mentioned is very highly incorrect, because the manner in which this sentence is being used has absolutely NOTHING to do with the article it is linked to. This is indeed an Internet phenomonon/joke, so an article "could" be created, but needs to be distinguished from the 80s-and-90s cheerleader-insulting phrase which is apparently the only current article involving phrases about "life"s.

Disambiguation - Get a life - In real life

"Having no life" is a popular phrase on the Internet, though not a meme in the Internet-traditionally sense (though it is a meme in the original, ancient sense). Common iterations of the phrase may be, "I have no life," "You have no life," "I'm gonna go get a life now," etc. Although the phrase Get a life may be used in relation to the phrase mentioned in this article, the phrase "get a life" may occasionally be used in it's pre-Internet sense.

It is popular to talk about Internet users, especially gamers, Computer programmers, and 4Chan users and the groups that spawned off of them (Anonymous, Encyclopedia Dramatica, et. al. or etc.), as though they do not understand the nature of reality, also know on the Internet as IRL. As part of that, it is common to say that the only way someone can play games such as MMOs, be an active participant in an message board, or edit Wikipedia is if they "have no life".

Jokes about Reality[edit]

Another topic within this realm is talking about "never having seen the sun before" - for example, Internet denzians may joke that they were forced to go outside today (various reasons may be given), and they were surprised by the very detailed landscape, lack of artifacts, and ?link-seamless-?link rendering speed, but confused by the lack of NPCs and couldn't find any non-boring quests to do. Many T-shirts have also been created around this concept, such as this one (link: I'm only here because my server is down - probably Jinx). Another related, but less-frequent, type of joke is the one where programmers are joked about as having sex with computers, such as here [links to the story] . Often, the "resident programming expert/techie" in a group of geeks, who often all or most of will have programming knowledge, and who will 'all' have basic knowledge about computers and building computers (always - because they are geeks), will be the one member of the group who is used for the jokes about having sex with the computers, or orgasmic at math, etc. An example of something that may be linked to this human saying something like, "[Target] does this literally," is this video [Jizz In My Pants Nerd Remix].

Usage in Bullying[edit]

The jokes about this are universally only used, and were first used, by geeks themselves, for fun. However, the phrase "you have no life", "do you even have a life", etc., is also frequently used for bullying, mainly by kids younger then 16 or so, and by women in their 20s-40s who don't use the Internet often (usually also women of they type that don't use full words when typing, such as 'u' instead of "you", and who don't understand the social and cultural expectations of the Internet. In this case, it is meant to imply that the user is a social outcast merely because he allegedly spends a lot of time on the Internet and/or on one particular site and/or a lot of time doing very social activities such as playing MMOs / LAN Parties, and even is sometimes used merely because someone has extensive knowledge! This is opposed to the more-frequent usage, where one is joking about themselves or someone else, with all of the same things except for the last one. The jokes, however, are not made in an aggressive way.
