Quick resources for working with Wikipedia[edit]

  • References – This handout explains why references are important, what the expectations for sourcing on Wikipedia are, where to place references, and the basics of adding "ref" tags.
  • Plagiarism – explains what plagiarism is on Wikipedia—including "close paraphrasing"—in addition to why and how to avoid it.
  • wikEd - a must-have! It is a full-featured integrated text editor for those using Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome browsers. To add it to your WP editor, log into your WP account. Then, in the top left corner, click "my preference." Under the "gadgets" tab, you will see wikiEd listed under "editing". Check the box and click "save" at the bottom of the page. Next time you go to edit an article you will see these new tools in your edit box.
  • ProveIt - a powerful icon-based tool for viewing, editing, adding, and inserting references. To add it to your WP editor, log into your WP account.
