User:Rfassbind/Unnumbered minor planet list

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the project page for the 2017-revision of the List of unnumbered minor planets (version 13-Jul-2017), for short LoUMP. As of July 2017, there are 239,202 unnumbered minor planets (uMP).

The LoUMP consists of mostly red-linked minor planets listed by year. The earliest designated uMPs (from 1927 to 1992) are listed in a 10-column wiki table (see § Original table) The subsequent vast majority of minor planets are just listed by year in a multi-column format. The list may contain at best 20,000 items, i.e. 10% of all existing uMPs.

Analysis[edit]

Currently LoUMP is:

  • table barely useful
  • Incomplete
  • Poorly maintained, technically un-maintainable
  • poorly reference
  • doesn't serve as base table for uMP#R (redirects)
  • ugly (full of redlinks → use colors in header to neutralize)
  • one single 140 KB-sized page
  • contains numbered MPs (updated from uMP)

Potential:

  • Base list of all uMP, allows cross check of created UMP-object articles that are not in Category:Unnumbered minor planets
  • list of long-time uMP
  • When were was it observed first? when last?
  • Who observed them first (potential discoverer)
  • what's the dynamic classification
  • link to object pages on MPC, JPL and LCDB for quick access;
  • When updating list, newly numbered uMPs with a blue-link (that drop out list) are easy to spot. This can serve as a cross-check whether such articles have been already moved to their numbered version, and if so, whether the move/amendments have been made correctly.

JPL's ELEMENTS.UNNUMB file[edit]

Download[edit]

  • A monthly updated data file of all unnumbered minor planets can be downloaded at JPL's SBDB at http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/?sb_elem
  • File: "Unnumbered Asteroids" (23 MB), as of July 2017
  • Filename: ELEMENTS.UNNUM, plain ASCII
  • Processing: for a detailed description, see § Fields

Fields[edit]

  • Designation — Unnumbered asteroid's preliminary designation. (directly taken)
  • Epoch — Epoch of the elements represented as the Modified Julian Date (MJD), which is defined as the Julian date - 2400000.5. (unused)
  • Orbital elements (used to determine dynamical class, for more details see Template:Minor planet color code legend)
    • a: semi-major axis in AU
    • e: eccentricity of the orbit
    • i: inclination of the orbit with respect to the J2000 ecliptic plane in degrees
    • w: argument of perihelion (J2000-Ecliptic) in degrees
    • node: Longitude of the ascending node (J2000-Ecliptic) in degrees
    • M: mean anomaly at epoch
  • H – absolute magnitude (directly taken, rounded to 1 decimal)
  • G – magnitude slope parameter (unused)
  • Ref – orbit solution reference (unused)

The LoUMP also displays the following columns not derived from this above data file. The data is fetched from JPL's and MPC's object view webpages, respectively. These fields are:

  • Uncertainty / condition code (JPL/MPC)
  • first and last observation date (JPL)
  • first observer (MPC, data must be looked up manually)
  • observation arc and number of observations (JPL)

With survey designation[edit]

JPL source list (ELEMENTS.UNNUM) is sorted by designation, not year. The survey designations are listed last in the data file. Survey designations need to be manually added to corresponding tables. The following list contains all PLS entries (about 25).
