Hy (Hyacinth) Money is an India-born English photojournalist who is considered the United Kingdom's first female sports photographer.[1][2][3]
Early life[edit]
Money is of Portuguese and Irish descent.[4] She was born in Bangalore,[5] and raised in Indian at a British military boarding school.[6] Money always had an interest in photography; when she came to the UK in the 1950s, she brought along a camera.[6][4] Money first worked in a photo processing in Croydon.[1]
Career[edit]
In 1973, Money decided to become a sports photographer after a visit to The Crystal Palace with her son Martin for his seventh birthday.[5][3] After initial opposition, in 1975, she was accepted and became the first female sports photographer in the National Union of Journalists.[6][7] She would become the first female photographer allowed on a football pitch.[2]
