Definition[edit]

The magnetization of a material is defined as its magnetic moment per unit volume.[1]: 14 [2]: 1  Like the magnetic moment, it is a vector quantity and function of position, e.g., M(r). The total magnetic moment of a body is given by the integral over its volume:[3]: 411 

Units[edit]

As a magnetic moment per unit volume, magnetization is represented by the symbol M and has units of amperes per meter (A/m) in SI units (emu/cm3 in cgs units). Referred to as the magnetic polarization or intensity (J or I), it is measured in teslas in the SI system (but still emu/cm3 in cgs). It can also be given as magnetic moment per unit mass (M or σ) with units A m2 / kg in SI units.[4]
