Eleven chapters highlight the injustices of the humanitarian crisis, in a barrage captivating photos of desperate situations.
The book was initially written as a marketing and educational tool for a charity based in Hamilton, Ontario and was meant to be a self published work. Late in the development process, the book caught the attention of a small publisher in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ponder Publishing released the book in December of 2007 and it had sold over 5000 copies in the first three months. The author, Vaden Earle, compiled the book from a collection of his personal experiences in the field as a humanitarian worker.
Earle, originally from Griquet, Newfoundland, was explains the background of the book in this article. www.adoptionmagazine.com cites Earle's book as a must read for anyone considering international adoption.
In a live radio interview on the Drew Marshall Show (Canadian talk show) Earle participated in a "Poverty Summit" which became the launching point for the book in Canadian bookstores.
One: A Face Behind The Numbers has received a Bronze Summit Creative International award for its design and has been adopted by many high school districts as mandatory social justice reading.
