Convertible / Cabriolet A body style with a flexible textile folding roof or rigid retracting roof — of highly variable design detail — to allow driving in open or enclosed modes.
SUV (Sport utility vehicle) 4x4 Jeep A four-wheeled vehicle with a drivetrain that allows all four wheels to receive power from the engine simultaneously. The terms are usually (but not exclusively) used in Europe to describe what is referred to in North America as a sport utility vehicle or SUV (see below).
Coupé A 2-door, 2- or 4-seat car with a fixed roof. Its doors are often longer than those of an equivalent sedan and the rear passenger area smaller; the roof may also be low.
Crossover / CUV a marketing term for a vehicle that derives from a car while borrowing features from an SUV or Minivan.
Station wagon Estate car Combi Break a passenger automobile with a body style similar to a sedan (saloon in British usage) but with the roofline following the full, sometimes extended rear cargo area, i.e. ending with a more vertical door than would be seen on a hatchback.
Fastback A fastback is a car body style whose roofline slopes continuously down at the back.
Hatchback Identified by a rear door including the back window that opens vertically to access a storage area not separated from the rest of the passenger compartment. May be 3 or 5 door and 2 to 5 seats, but generally in the US the tailgate isn't counted making it a 2-door and 4-door.
Liftback A liftback is a car body style in which the cargo space (boot) is accessed through a tailgate that extends up to the higher end of the C-pillar and includes the rear window. Liftbacks have either fastback-like rear ends, which are significantly sloped compared to more vertical hatchbacks, or are notchback-shaped.
Notchback A cross between the smooth fastback and angled sedan look. It is a sedan type with a separate trunk compartment.
Sedan Saloon Berline A car seating four or more with a fixed roof that is full-height up to the rear window. Several versions of the body style exist, including four-door, two-door, and fastback models.
