Janhvi Kapoor (pronounced [dʒaːnɦʋiː kəˈpuːr]; born 6 March 1997) is an Indian actress who appears in Bollywood films. Born into the Kapoor family, she is the daughter of producer Boney Kapoor and actress Sridevi. Kapoor made her screen debut with the tragic romance Dhadak (2018), a remake of the 2015 Marathi-language film Sairat.[1] She will next appear in the Karan Johar-directed epic-period drama Takht (2020), along with an ensemble cast that includes Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Anil Kapoor. Both films are produced by Johar under his banner, Dharma Productions.

Life and career[edit]

Early life and career beginnings (1997–present)[edit]

Janhvi Kapoor was born on 6 March 1997 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, to Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor and actress Sridevi.[2] She has a younger sister, Khushi.[3] Her half-siblings, actor Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor, are Boney's children from his first marriage to Mona Shourie Kapoor.[3] Born into the Kapoor family, Kapoor is the niece of Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor, who are Boney's younger brothers. Her cousins include Sonam Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor, and Harshvardhan Kapoor, who are children of Anil. Kapoor and her sister were raised in the Lokhandwala Complex neighborhood of Mumbai.

In her late teenage years, Kappor increasingly became a popular media target due to her being Sridevi's daughter. In later interviews, she would admit that she "did nothing (accomplishment-wise) to deserve this kind of attention," and felt she needed to be worthy of it, and attempted performing credible acting performances.[4][5] She completed her schooling at the Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai, and attended the Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. As she graduated from school and entered her early twenties, media outlets speculated if she would become an actress. Kapoor intended to act, and her mother was surprised and often discouraged her from it, noting the intense social scrutiny and pressures accompanying it, and encouraged her to instead pursue the medical field.[6][7] However, Kapoor persisted and eventually won her parents over. Producer Karan Johar agreed to launch her in his production Dhadak.[8] After Sridevi passed away in Dubai while attending the wedding of her nephew Mohit Marwah,[9] Kapoor and her siblings regrouped at their father's house to mourn privately.[10]

Prior to her debut film's release, Kapoor had graced the cover of the June 2018 issue of India's Vogue magazine, to whom she also gave one of her first professional interviews.[11] Her debut, Dhadak, was directed by Shashank Khaitan and followed her opposite Ishaan Khatter. was a Hindi remake of the 2016 Marathi film Sairat, Dhadak saw Kapoor in the role of a strong-minded young upper-class girl whose life turns chaotic after she decides to elope with a lower-class love interest (played by Khatter), and her enraged family obstucts her at every turn. The film received predominantly negative reviews,[12] but with a total collection of 1.1 billion on a production budget of 410 million, it proved to be a commercial success.[13][14] Writing for CNN-News18, Rajeev Masand criticised the film for removing caste-based references and deemed it inferior to the original, but felt Kapoor had "a fragility that makes her instantly endearing, and a soulful quality that makes it hard to take your eyes off her on screen".[15] Conversely, Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost wrote, "Charisma can come through even when it is burdened by faulty writing. Sadly, Janhvi lacks personality and delivers a colourless performance as Parthavi".[16]

Upcoming projects[edit]

Kapoor's second film will be the period drama film Takht (2020) - which was announced by Karan Johar on his Twitter and Instagram handles on 8 August 2018. [17] Takht is a Mughal-set story, entailing the struggle of two brothers' fight for dynastic succession, and the issues they face in romance and war that lead to a dramatic conclusion. Kapoor will be cast with an ensemble including Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Kapoor's own uncle Anil Kapoor, with Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar. Also produced by Johar, Johar will also direct the film, making it his first large-scale ensemble cast film since the family drama Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham (2001). [18]
