John J. Burns was an Irish-American politician who served as the 29th Mayor of Burlington, Vermont from 1939 to 1948. His nephew, Brian D. Burns, served as the 72nd Lieutenant Governor of Vermont.[1][2]

Biography[edit]

Burns was born on May 23, 1894 in Sligo, United Kingdom in present day Republic of Ireland. He served as the Mayor of Burlington, Vermont from 1939 to 1948. Burns died on March 1, 1984 in Burlington at the age of 89 years old. He was buried in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington, Vermont.[3]
