Mahato or Mahto is a Hindu surname community,found mostly in the Bihar,Jharkhand,Bengal,Eastern UP,MP. Mahto term originated from Sanskrit mahat - Great.They are land owners, traditionally a peasant community describes them as "skilled agriculturalists. Koeri mahto claims kushwaha community a decendents of Rama's son Kush a suryanvanshi. During the zamindari period one person each from bhumihar,Yadav and beldar group had been given an status Mahto(Headman) for the respective part of the village.The tittle was coveted by everyone and was conferred upon deserving persons by the Zamindar. During the zamindari period, "Mahto" was a caste-agnostic title given to the headman of a village ward.
