Museum dan Galeri Seni Derby

I was very sad to hear that Sanko had died in July after a long illness. He created probably the only museum in the UK that you can wander around and understand everything even if you cannot speak a word of English but you only speak Bahasa Indonesian.

Sanko not only translated articles into Indonesian but he went back and told the original authors of their mistakes and he wrote articles about objects in the museum in Indonesian that had not been described elsewhere on wikipedia. I certainly enjoyed translating an article that Sanko had written about a tribal mask from Indonesian into English.

Sanko came from Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia 0°30′07″S 117°09′11″E / 0.502°S 117.153°E / -0.502; 117.153 and he worked hard competing with Anastasis Lvova and Tappinen. He eventually gained joint third with Conte di sarro from Italy. He wrote 100 diffeent articles, mostly in Bahasa Indonesian but also two in Java. The competion was named after "Joseph Wright" and he wrote an article in Indonesian that was a "Good Article". This showed that he could edit with quality (as well as productively.)

In September 2011 the Mayor of Derby awarded prizes to Sanko via a web cast and these paintings and books signed by the Wikimedia UK board and the mayor were mailed to him by Derby Museum. (The Mayor had never seen a web cast before!) Sanko was invited to rejoin the editors from Derby when the recent GibraltarpediA contest was launched and although we saw most return we should have wondered where Sanko was.

If you speak Indonesian and you want to find out about England then click on Wikipedia and read about the articles in that he brought alive.
