William R. (Bob) Norris is an American inventor, researcher in Robotics, Mechatronics and virtual environments and is a noted authority in the fields of robotics, control systems and entrepreneurship. He has been the founder and CEO of two companies R-Smart LLC and iMS2 LLC.

Early life and education[edit]

Born in 1963 in Fort Kent, Maine, Bob grew up in Alton, Illinois and Brighton, Illinois where he attended Marquette Catholic High School (Alton, Illinois) and Southwestern High School (Piasa, Illinois). After serving as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he went back to college. He earned a BS (1993), an MS (1997) and his Ph.D. (2001) in engineering from the University of Illinois. He returned to college at Duke University at The Fuqua School of Business in 2007.
