Week 4 Notes[edit]
good sources: textbooks (cite to the chapter), primary sources (sparingly, not too new), literature review (summary of the current literature, no primary data), pubmed articles (pubmed search), published material that has been reviewed in some way (evaluate who published it and what biases they might have), textbook is a good source for the basics
caution: if you use the biochem free for all textbook on the website, it cites wikipedia sometimes (don't want to cite a source that cites wikipedia)
poor sources: blogs, press releases, independent websites, news articles (can sensationalize information to get people to read the article)
- don't necessarily know the reliability of these sources, can be presented with bias
- textbook
- review articles on the topics you want to edit (bibliography -> good place to find primary literature)
homework week 4: pick on of the articles and find at least 5 sources that you can use to expand that article, post here (make sure there's enough information -> if you can't find five, pick a new topic)
final revision should include ten sources
DOI and PMID numbers at end of articles are useful (maybe ISBN)
WP:REFB reference for "referencing for beginners"
WP:CITE reference for citing
Writing tips: don't write with the sources in front of you (leads to possible plagiarism)
main contributions, where she got her education, discoveries, publications (key articles) and briefly describe main finding
Week 5 Notes[edit]
TO DO:
- make first live edit, doesn't need to be any more than a sentence, can be a small change to the article that you'll be editing for your project DUE Tuesday
- two more training due by next week
- start drafting article
Talk pages: collaboration among wiki editors to discuss edits that have already been made and why they were made
major edits should be the consensus of the community
post proposed changes to the talk page, it can be 2 to 3 sentences, "i would like to expand/modify/add to this section and ask for feedback from the community DUE Tuesday
first draft wont be live article, just posted in sandbox February 20th
two trainings, live edit somewhere on wikipedia, and post proposed changes in talk page, begin drafting article (first draft due in two weeks)

Adding images to wiki articles
What can you add?
can: anything in the public domain, with a copyright saying you can use it, or you create yourself, wikimedia commons (all images posted on wikipedia, copyrighted with a free license)
can't: anything if you don't have the copyright (nothing from textbook or really anything that's on the internet unless there is a copyright on the page saying you can use it)
