Noir (NJ) Noir [nwär] noun (French) black, dark a genre of crime film or fiction characterized by cynicism, fatalism, and moral ambiguity. “Film noir” flourished in the years after World War II, reflecting the deep pessimism of the times and the pervasive alienation of people who feared that annihilation was right around the corner. The flawed hero struggles fiercely against the corruption and moral obscurity of the powers that be against the dark backdrop of the underworld and its doomed cast of characters. Our times are no different. The arts have become a parade of mimics and imitators, crafting their image before their vision, and eschewing all but wealth and social media fame. Hip-hop, born out of the primordial ooze of jazz, blues and soul music, today is reduced to a shadow of its former depth and brilliance. Street music, true music of the everyman, immersed in his real triumphs and fears, has been elbowed aside by the charlatans and their admirers, pursuing the palliative proprieties of mass culture.
