Shannen McInerney (born 1990s), known professionally as Shannen James, is a singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Australia.[1] Her debut EP Arrows was released on 25 September 2020.

Early life[edit]

James began singing and performing at the age of six at family gatherings, birthday parties, and music competitions at shopping centres.[1][2]

James grew up listening to the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore.[2]

In an interview with NME Australia, James discussed how she came to form an interest in music, stating:

"I just wanted to be a Spice Girl, just like every other six-year-old girl at the time. I actually feel really lucky that I grew up in that period... It was just so amazing to see huge female artists that were so successful. They were definitely people I looked up to as a kid."[2]

Musical style and influences[edit]

James is primarily a pop,[3] folk-pop,[4] indie-pop,[3] and guitar pop artist.[2] Her music has occasional grunge influences.[3]

James' music has been likened to Fleetwood Mac and Jack Johnson by Ones to Watch,[5] and Maggie Rogers, Haim, and Kita Alexander by Triple J.[4]

James describes her music as being influenced by Fleetwood Mac, Tame Impala, Haim, First Aid Kit, Shania Twain, and Arctic Monkeys.[6]

Career[edit]

2018: Getaway[edit]

On 12 February 2018, James' debut EP Getaway was released independently.[7] James performed at Edinburgh Castle in Brunswick, Victoria on 30 March 2018.[1]

2019–2020: Arrows[edit]

On 12 July 2019, James released her debut single "Something in the Water".[8]

On 20 February 2020, James released the single "Collide".[9]

On 14 June 2020, James premiered the single "Arrows" on Triple J's 2020 with Richard Kingsmill.[10] On 16 June 2020, James released "Arrows", alongside the announcement of her EP of the same name.[10]

On 26 August 2020, James released the single "Empty Eyes", which was premiered on Ones to Watch the previous day.[5]

On 22 September 2020, James released "Seventeen", the third and final single from Arrows.[citation needed]

Arrows was released on 25 September 2020.[2]
