Stella Worthington was a biologist, geographer and explorer, author (with E. Barton Worthington) of Inland Waterways of Africa (1932) among other works.
She took an undergraduate degree in geography at the University of Cambridge, studying at Newnham College, Cambridge from 1929-30.
With E Barton Worthington, Vivian Fuchs and others, she took part in the Cambridge Expedition to East African Lakes, 1930-31.Bodleian Libraries, Archive of Edgar Barton Worthington Letters, 1912-1965 Letters, 21 Oct 1930-13 Oct 1931
In Africa, she worked with the Kikuyu epople ran a dairy farm for the improvement of native cattle. On their return to the UK, she ran an experimental farm in Sussex, researching grazing grasses.
Her publications included Inland Waterways of Africa (1932), maps of parts of Lake Rudolph (Nairobi 1931), and a contribution to the Empire Survey Review on Lake Reudoph (1932)
Personal life and education
She was born 31 Dec 1905, Rickmansworth, Herts, daughter of Rev Manasseh Johnson and Mary Gertrude Trigg. She was educated at St Paul's Girls School, London. She married biologist Dr Edgar Barton Worthington CBE in 1930. They had three daughters, all of whom followed their parents into a scientific career.
She was a talented pianist, and a keen musician. New Scientist, No 235, 18 May 1961
