Althea Moses (born January 1970) is a former Belizean American track & field athlete, winner of a gold medal at the 1987 Jr. Olympics and 1996 Olympian. Business woman and humanitarian.[edit]

Althea Moses is a native of Belize. As a freshman in high school, she started running varsity track and playing basketball at Morningside High School (MHS) in Inglewood. While at MHS, Althea excelled in academics; In 1988, she graduated sixth in her class with a 3.6 G.P.A. Moses started out (as a freshman) playing as a forward on the girls varsity basketball at MHS, in 1985. After basketball season ended, she joined the track team; the next few years, Moses became one of California's and the nation's outstanding, record-breaking triple-jumpers and 800 meter runners. In her senior year at MHS, she played on the same team with Lisa Leslie - former WNBA star and Olympic Gold medalist - that year they were undefeated until the CIF California State Championship Finals in Basketball. While at MHS, Althea excelled in track & field. She competed in the 800 meter run and triple-jump; she won gold medals in the triple-jump at the CIF Finals Southern Section Track & Field Meets. Althea won a gold medal in the triple-jump (40' 9 3/4") at the CIF California State Meet in 1988.[2] She won a gold medal and broke the then triple-jump record with a  jump of 40 feet 1 inches  at the 1987 Junior Olympics in Syracuse New York.[3] She earned a bronze medal in the 800 meter  (2:13) at the CIF California State Meet in 1987.[4]

Althea still holds Morningside High School track & field records: 800 meter run (2:13) and Triple-Jump (40'9 3/4"). At MHS, Althea Moses was: a three-time All-American in track & field, Scholar-Athtlete of the Year in 1988. [5] Althea had the #3 best high-school triple-jump mark (40'9 3/4") in the nation, in 1988.[6] She went on to compete in the triple-jump on a track scholar at UCLA. While a sophomore student/athlete at UCLA, she won a silver medal in the triple-jump at the PAC-10 Track & Field Championships.[7]

Althea won two gold medals in the long jump and triple-jump at 1994 Central American Games. Her two gold medals were the only two gold that Belize won at those games. Althea also broke (and still holds) the triple-jump record ( at those games. 12.21 meters) [8]

While at UCLA, Althea competed in the triple-jump at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics in Stuttgart, Germany - and again in 1995 in Goteborg, Sweden for Belize. She jumped 12.17 meters at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics. [9]

After graduating from UCLA in 1993, Althea became a professional track & field athlete; Althea Moses won a silver medal and a new personal record (P.R.) in the triple-jump with a mark of 42' 3" at the 1996 San Jose Invitational Track Meet in California. [10]She's on the UCLA ALl-Time Olympian list for the triple-jump. [11]

Althea is the Belize National Record Holder in the indoor triple-jump (12.02 meters) and the outdoor triple-jump with a mark of (13.02 meters or 42'8 3/4" TJ Modesto, CA 5/8/96. She competed in the treiple-jump for her native Belize in the triple-jump[12] at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA. [13]

In 2005, Althea Moses was inducted into Morningside High School Hall of Fame along with fellow (1986-88) high school basketball teammate, Lisa Leslie - former WNBA star and Olympic Gold medalist. [14] According to iusd.net,[15] both Althea & Lisa joined staff and students to celebrate the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the official opening of the new track at Morningside High School in 2002.[16]

Personal Life

Before leaving Belize for the U.S., at age ten, Moses attended St. Johns Primary School. Althea Moses and her family lived in Inglewood, CA while she attended Morningside High School (1984-1988). In 1988, she was U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete of the Year.. While at MHS, Althea Moses excelled in academics; In 1988, she graduated sixth in her class with a 3.6 G.P.A. and chose a UCLA track & field scholarship to compete in the triple-jump. While at UCLA, she won two beauty pageants: 1991 Miss Belize Body Beautiful and 1992 Miss Cyclist. She was one of the three female dancers in the Original Elegant Flair Dance Group in 1991-1992. In 2010, Althea Moses started dating Kashif Saleem (aka Michael Jones) [R&B music songwriter, producer, singer, artist, author, humanitarian]. In 2011, Kashif asked Althea Moses to marry him; Althea Moses became Kashif Saleem fiancé. [17]They resided in Playa Vista, CA and Marina del Rey, CA.[18]From 2010 to present, Althea Moses and Kashif Saleem built a quality relationship filled with friendship, joy, forgiveness, and love.[19]

Education

Althea earned a [BA] Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in 1993. After the Olympics, she earned two degrees, simultaneously: [MA] Master of Arts degree in Education and California Teaching Credential from National University, in 2001. She graduated from graduate school with a 3.8 G.P.A.[20]

Career

In 1998, Althea became an elementary school teacher in Inglewood, CA. She taught 2nd grade for nine years and 3rd grade for two years; She decided to be apart of the health & fitness industry to help others feel and look better, and experience a good quality of living. Moses has been sharing her Olympic health & fitness skills and knowledge through personal training and her company. She's the creative director/personal trainer and founder of Althea Moses Health and Fitness Company. www.altheam.com[21] She teaches her own one-on-one and group fitness (ALTHEA) classes in Los Angeles and Inglewood, California. She calls it ALTHEA [aka Althea Fitness. Moses]. In 2013, Althea Moses invented and created a couple fitness innovations to help people feel and look better: [22]ALTHEA exercise and the Circle Mark Circle Hand Gesture[23] [24]

Althea Moses was chosen by the Ready, Set, Gold! program to join several other Olympians and Paralympians to inspire and assist middle school and high school students in P.E.; she discusses and demonstrates to the students the importance of making healthy choices and performing exercises to pass the annual LAUSD Fitnessgram Test in California - and live a healthy lifestyle after high school. She has been a part of the program since 2011.[25]

Professional Awards Althea Moses is an award-winning health & fitness professional. In 2011, Moses was chosen as a Cambridge Who's Who Registry of Executives, Professionals & Entrepreneurs and Los Angeles Business Journal's Women Making A Difference nominee (2014 and 2015), and Women's Summit 2016.
