3x Oscillator Is a synthesizer created by Image-Line, a company focused on creating software for music. It is a core component of Image-Line's FL Studio, a popular music production program created by Didier Dambrin, who also created many of FL Studio’s other synthesizers. Its main purpose is to create a bright sound to be filtered through the synthesizer's tools. Effectively, the tools provide a large range of Timbre that can be created by changing the shape of the sound wave, then adjusting specific parts. 3xOsc is deceptively powerful, due to its small size in appearance but large functionality. It works by passing a sound through three separate oscillators, one with a high pitch, one mid, and one low pitch. Each oscillator can be customized separately to create different unique sounds.

The 3x Oscillator was first introduced to FL Studio (back when it was known as Fruity Loops) in Version 3.0.0 on February 7, 2001. It was created by the same person who created FL Studio, Didier Dambrin.

Parameters[edit]

  • Shape Selector - The shape selector is an option that allows users to select the shape of the wave, therefore changing the sound dramatically. The available default shapes are: sine, triangle, square, saw, rounded saw, and noise. There is also a custom option, which allows the user to use their own sample.
  • Invert Switch (INV) - When two oscillators with equal settings are mixed, and one of them is inverted, they cancel each other out and no sound is produced. If, however, the frequencies are offset just a small amount, different sounds are produced.
  • Stereo Phase (SP) - The stereo phase knob creates a stereo effect. This results from the oscillator starting at a different point on the oscillator's shape. It is often used to add richness and depth to the sound produced.
  • Stereo Detune (SD) - This allows the user to de-tune the sound, by applying a slightly different frequency at the left and right sound channels. As a result, a flanging effect is created.
  • Volume - This knob sets the relative volume on each of the oscillators. Relative means the overall sound output will remain the same, but the three oscillators' volume will change in relation to each other.
  • Panning - This will set the stereo panning of the individual oscillators.
  • Coarse Tuning (CRS) - Coarse tuning will detune the sound by a large degree.
  • Fine Tuning (FINE) - Fine tuning will detune the sound by a small degree.
