Heart Shaped Bruise is a 2012 novel by British author Tanya Byrne.

The novel is written in the first-person perspective as a series of diary entries by Emily Koll, an inmate at the fictional Archway Young Offenders Institution in north London. Emily has been incarcerated for a violent crime, details of which are gradually revealed during the novel. Emily is the daughter of an infamous criminal and has gained notoriety herself through the crime for which she was imprisoned. The novel tells the story of Emily's relationship with Juliet, the daughter of a policeman who killed her father, and Sid, a boy who is at school with them.

Plot[edit]

The novel begins with a letter from Emily to Juliet, in which Emily refuses to say sorry to Juliet and claims Juliet got what she deserved.

Characters[edit]

Emily Koll
the protagonist of the novel who is in a young offender's institution for an unknown crime. Emily changes her name to Rose in order to stalk Juliet.
Juliet
the daughter of the policeman who killed Emily's father. She is in the Witness Protection programme, for which she has taken the name Nancy.
Sid
joins the school attended by Juliet/Nancy and Emily/Rose.
Doctor Gilyard
the psychologist who treats Emily at the institution.
