Introduction: Kalai Moyen Uddin High School or Kalai M. U. High School (KvjvB g‡qb DÏxb D”P we`¨vjq) is a century old higher secondary school located in the Kalai Thana under Joypurhat District of Bangladesh. This is a Bangla medium semi-government high school operating under the Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board of Rajshahi, and has been one of the most illustrious educational institutions of the region in its category. Established in 1913, the school has been imparting secondary education from the very beginning with good repute. Its founder Mr. Moyen Uddin Talukder was a social leader and a landlord hailing from the famous Talukder family of Kalai. This is the oldest school of Kalai Thana and one of the oldest schools in Bangladesh.
Location: The school is located near the Kalai Thana Health Complex, half a kilometer away from the Joypurhat-Bogra road and Kalai Thana Head Quarters. The bi-weekly Kalai haat (Market) is also housed nearby. The School is well connected by road to its catchment area (the nearby localities wherefrom its students come).
History: During the British Era, just after the cancellation of the partition of Bengal in 1911 (Banga Vanga), quite a number of educational institutions were established in the then East Bengal (now Bangladesh) keeping the educational and social uplifting of this region in mind. The partition of Bengal (1905) would have been beneficial to the eastern part of Bengal (the present day Bangladesh) with Dhaka as its capital, and development works of this area would have been more focused. But in the wake of much political turmoil and debate it was cancelled in 1911, and the British Government took a policy of making good to the people of East Bengal by allowing more educational institutes, more budget allocation for development works, etc mainly to appease the aggravated inhabitants of this region. Dhaka University (established in 1921, although the process started as early as in 1909) is one famous example of this process. At that time there was no seat of higher secondary education in the Khetlal Thana under the Joypurhat Mohokuma of Bogra District. As a result, some local educated and conscious people took the initiative to start a school. Kalai was a village under the Khetlal Thana at that time, and later Kalai became a separate thana . The school started its journey with the name of Kalai High English Institute in 1913, and was subsequently recognized by Calcutta (Kolkata) University in 1916. The first premises of the school was built on land donated by the local Talukder family. In 1933, a member of the Talukder family Mr. Moyen Uddin donated 2 large ponds to the school, and the school was named after him from that time. The school has been donated a total of 10 acre land till now.
Current Status: The school has 16 full time teachers, 5 administrative staff, and over 600 students as of 31.05.2009. The school offers concentration in Science, Humanities and Commerce, and is equipped with a science laboratory, computers, library and physical fitness equipments. In the SSC examination of 2009, 64 students passed out of 87 with a passing rate of 73.56%. Here are the detailed results: A+ was secured by 5 students, A = 21, A- = 18, B = 17 & C = 3 students.
The Headmasters: First Headmaster of the school was Babu Gyanendra Kumar Bagchi, BA, and the current headmaster is Mr. Abdul Mannan Talukder, MA in English and a descendent of the founder of the school Mr. Moyen Uddin.
Famous Alumni: There are many students of the school who later emerged as significant contributors in social, economic, cultural and political sphere of the locality and beyond. Many successful names can be quoted who has achieved excellence in their own field of work, and thus has made their alma mater proud. Here are a few names:

Khurshid Alam, playback singer and cultural personality 6. Md. Golam Mostofa, MP of the Joypurhat-2 constituency of the national parliament 7. Md. Abdul Momen, lecturer of English Literature, World University of Bangladesh & a PhD researcher.
Alumni Association: The school currently has no alumni association, but efforts are under way by some ex students for establishing an alumni association that will be a meeting platform for its ex students as well as play an advisory role for the school management committee.
The Centenary Celebrations in 2013: The school is on the verge of celebrating its 100 glorious years soon, and the school management committee, current faculty members, students—current and past, and the local communities are already thinking of making the event a grand success.
