Presence in Legislative Assemblies[edit]

Indian National Congress is the only political party in India, which has experience of running the state government of every Indian states in post-independence Indian history.
As of December 2023, the INC is in power in the states of Kerala, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Telengana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and the union territory of Puducherry. In the states of Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, it shares power with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under the banner of Mahagathbandhan and Secular Progressive Alliance respectively. As part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, it is nationally allied with Aam Aadmi Party and All India Trinamool Congress, even though it is not part of their governments in Delhi and West Bengal.
The Congress is the principal opposition party in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Assam, Arunchal Pradesh, Tripura and Nagaland, while it is part of the opposition alliances led by Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
