Helpful Tools[edit]

Category name order[edit]

As far as I know the way the names are listed in the category is determined by the way in which the category is added to the individual article... So - "Category:Dual code rugby internationals|Price, Ray (rugby league footballer)" would list Ray Price under 'P' for Price. I think this is the way you should proceed in terms of this category. I imagine it would require changing all the pages unless there is some automatic way of doing it that I don't yet know about! -- User:CumberlandsAshes81 12 September 2006

Lists of Dual Rugby Internationals[edit]

Redirecting duplicate articles[edit]

With Kevin Ryan, I simply made Kevin Ryan (footballer) a redirect to Kevin Ryan (rugby league footballer). You do this by replacing all the content on the page with this code:

#REDIRECT [[Kevin Ryan (rugby league footballer)]]

To sort out John Sutton you'll need to merge the two articles, just move thie stuff on one that isn't on the other over to the other, then make the first one a redirect. Geddit? I'd go with having the article at simply John Sutton, it's an easier name. Finally for deleting Cyril Abotomy, it needs listed at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion. Creating sub-pages[edit]

I had this all written out quite well and lost my edit... damn proxy server I guess. Anyway, it works like this: User:Sticks66/Build links Go to your user page User:Sticks666

Edit it

Create a link to a subpage (the subpage doesn't exist yet) such as User:Sticks666/Sandbox

(note: it's a page in your user space - nobody else really cares what name you use, as long as it's not a banned name in which case you will find that out pretty quickly). A lot of people as you pointed out have them named for the project they are working on, and if you use them for drafts then there's nothing wrong with User:Sticks666/Articlename which makes it easy to move the subpage straight to Articlename. And to remember what the subpage is for when you fall off that bandwagon... ;)

Save your user page.

Your user page now has a redlink to User:Sticks666/Sandbox (or whatever). Click it and you will get to the edit screen for a page in user space which does not exist yet. That page has a blurb referring you to WP:SUBPAGES. When you need more information than what I have just given you, go and check it out.

PS. If you need more prompt assistance, put the {{helpme}} template on your talk page. Apparently it gets fairly prompt (<10 minutes) responses, from a group of people who have that template on a watch list or something. Garrie 23:12, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Creating categories[edit]

It's been a while since I did Categories but if you scroll to the bottom of any categorised page in editing mode you'll see a few boxes showing: [[Category:Australian captains]] or something to that effect. When categorising things, make sure you group the cateogry with the rest of the existing ones down the bottom of the page. This will make them easier to manage. I'm not sure why, but categories stay redlinked until you edit that redlinked category and add another category into it (i.e. the St. George players category should link to "rugby league players" or something). Check out how other similar categories employ hierachy and do the same thing I guess. The linked articles to that category should already appear in that category if you check - when you click it you'll get an edit page but if you scroll down I think it should list out all of those players already put into there. I found the code that creates the break automatically. It's <*br style="clear:both;" /> - remove the asterisk.

Reverting Vandalism[edit]

Haha yeah it's pretty straight forward, but only when you figure out how to do it. It wasn't until a month or two ago that I realised there was a simple way. Basically go through the history and click the version before the vandalism by clicking the date and time. It opens up an archived page whereby you click "edit" and then save the page. However, an easier way is to to click "last" next to the vandlised section. Here it shows you a difference between the two pages - at the top right hand side of the newer version there is an "undo" button. Click that and then just save the next page that comes up. It took me 24 months to realise the section option existed...
As for administrators, they have the right to delete and undelete pages, ban users and edit protected pages (which they can also protect and unprotect further). If you ever need help with stuff like that I suggest dropping User:DaGizza a line. Hope all this helps! mdmanser 13:21, 10 September 2007 (UTC)


Categorising the name of one person who appears in a broader article[edit]

Hey Florrie, Been linking a few old coaches to the RL Coaches category. Because the article I wrote on Frank Burge is actually about him and his three brothers and called Burge Family when I link Category:Rugby league coaches|Burge, Frank I get the family name on the list in the category. I've also noticed it in similar situations with the McLean Family (rugby footballers). Any clues how this can be avoided so the relevant individual name shows on the category list ? -Sticks66 08:59, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Worked this out in case your interested. Ensure each player in a "family" article has their own name article that REDIRECTS to the family article. On that own name article post the "Category" on the same line as the REDIRECT command. Then on the Category list will appear the name, albeit that it will be in italics unlike all others. -Sticks66 09:40, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

You simply use the same infobox, but change the "image" parameter. For instance, from the 1985 series article:

Uploading Public Domain photographs[edit]

I'm not sure how much information you need but as I am used to writing job descriptions from scratch, I'll start at the beginning. This is for Mozilla, by the way, but I think it's pretty similar to IE if you use it.

  1. Select photograph from PicturesAustralia
  2. Save image to your desktop (or other folder) by right click, save image as
  3. In the 'save image' pop-up, type image name in file name text box (e.g. M.J. Dore 1907.jpg)
  4. Click on 'save' and file will be sent to your desktop (or other folder)
  5. In Wikipedia, click on Upload file in the left hand menu and the Wikipedia Upload page will appear
  6. Towards the bottom of the page, go to Do you already know the license and are familiar with our image policies? Go directly to the upload form. and click on upload form.
  7. The Upload file page will appear. Scroll past all the warnings and other text until you get to the upload file form.
  8. Next to the source filename text field is the browse button. Select the browse button.
  9. Select the file from your desktop or other folder from the file upload pop-up.
  10. Select open on the pop-up and the file sourcename and destination filename will appear in the text fields on the upload file form.
  11. If you wish to change the destination filename at this point you may do so.
  12. In the summary field, type in {{PD-Australia}}.
  13. If you wish to type in any other comment such as 'image cropped from Image:Joe_Bloggs_1949.jpg' type it underneath the PD-Australia template.
  14. Ignore Licensing and go down to upload file
  15. Select upload file and that's it.

Copyright free photos for our articles on Aust RL Old Timers[edit]

Mentioned before that I have more failure than success at uploading images, so I'm requesting assistance of Project to upload to our articles 10 old shots. All usable under pre-1955 "copyright expired" rationale Boylo refers to above which he successfully quotes in clear detail on Harry Bath.

PLAYERS: Search "Harold Horder" for two that could add to Harold Horder; search "Mick Madsen" reveals a shot & two cartoons for Mick Madsen; search "Duncan Thompson" for a shot and a caricature for Duncan Thompson; search "Vic Hey" for an excellent portrait of the great Vic Hey.

ADMINISTRATORS: Search "Harry Sumerland" (sic) & "J J Giltinan" for photos to add to the stubs Harry Sunderland and J J Giltinan.

GROUP SHOTS: Search "Founders of Queensland Rugby Football League". This shot would perfectly add early in the History paragraph of Queensland Rugby League plus also appropriate to repeat on the individual articles of Micky Dore and George Watson (rugby footballer).

TEAM SHOTS: Not generally suggesting we add team shots to individ. articles but for Jim Craig (rugby league) & Bill Tyquin I think the shots from the respective searches "unbeaten Queensland 1924" and "Queensland Rugby League Team in 1949" are appropriate since a) there are no other shots of these guys, b) they're the captains in each and part of their notability is their status as national & state captains.

FINALLY: Search "two captains shake hands" reveals a great shot to add to NSWRL season 1934 since it shows Dave Brown (rugby league) (in his distinctive headgear) and Frank McMillan shaking hands and seems to indeed be the Grand Final. Also appropriate on McMillan's article.

I cropped Mr Watson and Mr Dore from the Founders photo if you want a clearer head shot. Not that the photo itself is particularly clear, but you can get a better look at them than seen in the group pic.

Pre-1955 Copyright expiry on photos[edit]

I've been wondering that too, but its my interpretation that Aust copyright laws as briefly outlined in Template:PD-Australia, override that of the library. Perhaps the libraries add that statement to each image they upload so they don't have to continually update expired copyrights etc. I had a look at ACC Information Sheet G23 (Duration of copyright) (Sep 2005), and it states that: "copyright lasted until 50 years from the end of the year of the artist’s death. However, different rules applied for: photographs (if taken before 1 May 1969, 50 years from the end of the year they were taken; on or after 1 May 1969, 50 years from the end of the year of first publication)". All a bit confusing really, but I figure that if you follow the PD-Australia guidelines, it's all good. Hope that was in some way helpful! Loopla (talk) 12:40, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Disambiguating individuals with a common name[edit]

I've encountered this before with Justin Smith (I think?) or some other player, can't remember. I've just been a bit lazy with it. I read a wikipedia guidlines page specifically related to this a while ago when I was trying to figure out what to do. Just tried to find it again quickly, but couldn't. I think there are some options. Using middle names or nationalities or maybe the dates of birth if known?--Jeff79 (talk) 02:46, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

There's a bit about it here, which I didn't read until after I named the Jeremy Smiths as (rugby league) and (rugby league 2). But as you don't (I assume) have the middle name for either of the Peter Gallagher's, it doesn't really help. One as (rugby league Qld), the other as (rugby league NSW)? Peter Gallagher needs a disambiguation page, too, otherwise it goes straight to some actor and there's no disambig hat on the article. •Florrie•leave a note• 02:09, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Cats on redirects[edit]

The basic problem with haveing cats on redirects is that ther are bots that create talk pages for them so as to put {{WP Australia}} tags on them, which then have to be deleted.--Grahame (talk) 12:20, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Where can I see the number of hits per Wikipedia article?[edit]

I've never been able to work out that trick to make a multi-used ref appear once in the Ref list with a, b, c etc. You just fixed it here. How do you do that ? -Sticks66 13:08, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

It’s explained in WP:REFNAME. Give the first instance of the reference a name in the ref tag (as in <ref name=foo>Reference text goes here</ref>) then for all subsequent instances, just put the shortened form (in my example, you’d just put <ref name=foo />) as the whole thing. Move a page[edit]

When you move a page, you are supposed use the move button, not copy the text into the desired target and redirect the old. When a cut and paste move is performed, it keep the old page history at the redirect and attribution for the article is broken.
