The Arizona representative is the previous year's champion of Arizona Interscholastic Association's Class 5A Division I state tournament and the Nevada representative is the previous year's champion of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Class 4A state tournament.

The first two competitions were held between two invited schools in the AIA, before the AIA-NIAA agreement in 2008. The game has been held in Arizona five times and Nevade once. University of Phoenix Stadium has hosted the most Sollenberger Classics, with Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman High School making the most appearances in the Classic with three appearances (2008, 2010, 2011) and Phoenix's Brophy College Preparatory (2007, 2008) and Chandler's Hamilton High School (2006, 2010) have the most victories with two each.
