The University of York Labour Club (UYLC), was founded in 1968 at the University of York. Ideologically it is Democratic Socialist. It is affiliated with Labour Students.

History[edit]

In 2014, York was one of three university clubs (along with Hull and Salford) to submit a motion to Labour Students, threatening to disaffiliate over their motions on One Member One Vote and One Club One Vote at the Labour Students National Conference being disallowed. Eight other university club chairs signed the letter.[1]

A debate planned by the Club about Israel had to be cancelled last minute due to inadequate security plans.[2] When was it? 2014-15?

Anna Baxter, a co-chair of the club, ran in 2024 to be the Labour Students chair.[3] In 2023 she was elected a councillor in the Hull Road ward.[4]

The club has a record of political activism on bipartisan issues in recent years. They were involved in a march to support the NHS in 2018,[5] campaigning against cuts to funding for disadvantaged students in 2014,[6] and demonstrating in support of refugees in 2015.[7] They also have a consistent record of supporting university staff on strike, including manning picket lines.[8][9]

The Club also played a role in supporting Labour general election campaigns in York, most recently in 2019.[10]

In 2024, through fortunate timings, the treasurer of the Club got Penny Mordaunt to agree to be in her BeReal.[11]
