An individual-based team competition is a kind of sporting event whereas two teams with an equal number of team members compete in a series of rounds or games as individuals and the team with more victories is named the winning team. Traditionally used in team competitions in eastern Asian countries such as kendo and judo, but it has been expanded to various team-based competitions. It is often not to be confused with other team competitions where the entire team compete.

Format[edit]
Most of the names of the format are derived from the Japanese classes, in order as follows (for a seven-battle competition system):
- "Frontman" (先鋒戦, "Senpōsen")
- "Vice-frontman" (次鋒戦, "Jipōsen")
- "Fifth-level general" (五将戦, "Goshōsen")
- "Middler" (中堅戦, "Chūkensen")
- "Third-level general" (三将戦, "Sanshōsen")
- "Vice-general" (副将戦, "Hukushōsen")
- "General" (大将戦, "Taishōsen")
In a competition consist of three battles, Frontman, Middler and General are often used, though the Third-level general, Vice-general and General are sometimes used. Five-battle competition uses the first three plus Vice-frontman and Vice-general in-between the three battles.
