Thomas J. Russell is a microwave designer and longtime member of the IEEE who specialized in directional couplers. He founded KRYTAR[1] in 1975 to pursue his engineering endeavors, pioneering microwave and broadband technology. In August 2006, Microwaves & RF magazine recognized Russell as a Microwave Legend [2].

Russell developed one of the first proprietary computer-aided-engineering (CAE) tools for designing microwave couplers[2]. He used this tool to develop many of the company's products. KRYTAR's product line includes directional couplers, directional detectors, 3 dB hybrids, MLDD power dividers/combiners, detectors, terminations, coaxial adapters and a power meter with the products covering DC to 67.0 GHz frequency range [3]. He holds a number of patents[4][5] and has published his research[6].

His management style "was based on the trust and respect of his employees and in placing value on their opinions"[2]. In 200X, Russell retired with Nancy Russell remaining as the Chairman and CEO of KRYTAR. The company remains privately owned[7].
