History of Robert Welch

Robert Welch (designer) started his design studio in 1955 in a small room in the “Old Silk Mill” located in Chiping Campden Cotswolds Since 1955 the design of the utensils has been designed in the same building with the front shop only 100 yards away from the location of the mill. There is also a shop located in Warwick. The shop originally opened in 1969 with Robert working closely with John Limbrey for over 40 years. Robert Welch is more famously known for selling cutlery but it also sells kitchen, living and other dining ware.

In the late nineties, Rupert and Alice Welch joined their family's business, and when Robert died on the 15th March in 2000 they carried on their company where they invested their time and money to help expand their business in to a new direction. They employed 3 in-house designers to help design their new products. From Rupert and Alice’s vision of their company Robert Welch has now expanded all over the world.

Robert Welch supplies many companies from America to Japan. Some suppliers include; 10 Downing Street; HRH the Duke of Edinburgh; John Lewis ; the Mirage and Bellagio hotel/casino’s in Las Vegas and also several museums around the UK and America.

Signature Knife Range

In 2007 the Robert Welch designers created their signature knife range. They worked with professional chefs developed to give comfort in the hand and the optimum cutting action. All of the handles and blades have been set at the best angle to minimise fatigue.

The specially designed knives are made from a single billet of German 1.4116 high carbon Stainless steel; it is then forged to the design specification; it’s then fully hardened and tempered for strength. The surface is then ground to size and the tang is electro-polished to make it Corrosion resistant the handle is then moulded over and into the tang; finally the cutting edge is prepared using CNC taper grinding technology and then finished off by hand. They are then tested to ensure the quality of production.

In 2009 the signature range was rated in the top 1% of all brand knives for sharpness and edge retention, the Red dot awardfor prestigious product design and a Gold accolade in the ‘Product of the Year'.They have also achieved the highest possible rating from the Craft Guild of Chefs.
