Loschbour man Bare URL in there. And skeletons don't normally "come from someone", they are normally "of someone", "came from a dark"-> "was of a"...
Bare URL (QPQ fail) is still there.
Yes
Philip Petty The hook seems unnecessarily confusing, especially since he was originally from Great Britain, so "his nation's" is odd, why not just "received the Medal of Honor..."? Yes
Holby City (series 18) This hook would be meaningful if any of us knew what the "BBC Action Line" really was. Is this for complaints? What sort of "Action" is it for? No article, no link, no explanation = meaningless hook.
From a search it looks like it's a way for the BBC to help people that may have been affected by something mentioned in a show (like domestic violence) get in touch with official help lines or similar. Not sure how the hook could be modified to account for this. Anarchyte (talk | work) 10:57, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
Well that's what I mean. I've never heard of it and I watch the BBC regularly. So what chance anyone else gets the significance?

Kuala Lumpur Mildly confused, the blurb says "gained city status" on 1 Feb, article says "Kuala Lumpur achieved city status in 1972,[64] becoming the first settlement in Malaysia to be granted the status after independence. Later, on 1 February 1974, Kuala Lumpur became a Federal Territory."... so either it gained city status before 1 Feb, or it gained city status and Federal Territory status on the same day, just the latter after the former?
Both happened on 1 February, one in 1972, the other in 1974. Clarified in article. Eddie891 Talk Work 12:56, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

2 February 2019 DYK General No queue loaded with 16 hours to go... Yes
Chesapeake and Ohio 1309 The article doesn't say "thousands of pounds", it says that some items weighed 300lb.
There might be some OR here, as the nominator is assuming that if "some" (minimum 2) items weighed 300 lb, and $14,000 worth of material was stolen, then the total was "thousands of pounds". Yoninah (talk) 13:59, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Maybe change to "dozens of parts"? That is verifiable from the article (12 of one type, 12 of another). --Khajidha (talk) 15:14, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, The source clearly says 12 crowns and 12 hubs weighing 300lbs each. Per WP:CALC, simple calculations are not OR. This is not derived from the $14,000 figure. MB 16:20, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
Yes, that's not what the article says now is it?
Yes it is. MB 18:42, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
It clearly is not. That may be how you interpret what is said there because you have read the source, but the article clearly does not say that. I'm not going on with this pantomime, I would either fix the article to exactly match the claim in the hook, or we'll re-visit it once it's on the main page. just mark it up as another QPQ failure, it doesn't really matter now the error has been sitting there on the main page for so long, despite it being highlighted many hours before it got there.
The article itself only says that some components weighed 300 lb. It did not say which components weighed that. The article says that 12 of one type of part and 12 of another were among the parts stolen. Based only on what is actually stated in the article it would be possible for there to have been 3 parts that each weighed 300 lb and uncounted other parts that together might make up any conceivable weight. If all those dozens of other parts weighed less than 100 lb total, it would be possible for the thefts to amount to less than 1000 lb total. Thus, it is not clear that "thousands of pounds" of brass were stolen. Upon checking the source for the "some of which weighed 300 lb" I can find no indication as to how many of the parts had such a mass. --Khajidha (talk) 19:56, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
Source [14], paragraph one says "Brass components weighing 300 pounds each", and paragraph two says "12 crown brasses and 12 hub liners". It's not talking about any other components. 24*300 = several thousand pounds (7,200 to be exact)". MB 20:40, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
Once again, that's not what it says in the article.
It says that the parts stolen included those things, implying that other things may have been stolen as well. Thus, it is not clear that these items were the 300 lb ones.--Khajidha (talk) 21:11, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

OTD F-16 Fighting Falcon Infobox says first flight was on 20 January.
Article text says, Its 90-minute maiden flight was made at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards AFB, California, on 2 February 1974. Its actual first flight occurred accidentally during a high-speed taxi test on 20 January 1974. I updated the infobox accordingly. howcheng {chat} 16:44, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

1978–79 Penn Quakers men's basketball team "the only nine-seed..."? Pardon? Perhaps this jargon is commonplace in college basketball but I haven't got a scooby. It appears this means the team seeded ninth? But at closer inspection, they were the team seeded ninth in "the ten-team East region", so is this actually ninth seed overall? And is this any more significant than a tenth seed or an eighth seed team doing this? Surely something more accessible and interesting (to a broad audience) can be found here.
I think this is supposed to mean that they were the only team that was seeded ninth in their region to make it to the Final Four. But even if that is so it is hardly "interesting to a broad audience". And this comes from an American who has argued in favor of putting the NCAA men's basketball final in the "In the news" section.--Khajidha (talk) 19:46, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
Well, where I'm from, a ninth seed winning something is hardly interesting, and a ninth seed is usually described as ninth most likely to win the whole thing, not the ninth most likely to win their region....

5 February 2019 DYK Ficus coronulata the source doesn't say that "indigenous people ... would toss", it simply says that one can "toss" (encyclopedic tone?) figs in to attract turtles. I.e. anyone could do it.
Anyone could do it, and sure the source doesn't say that in exactly those words, but that chapter of the source is someone recounting what they learned from an indigenous woman who was in turn recounting the ways her ancestors related to the land; I think the hook is fair enough. GoldenRing (talk) 10:03, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
That's a leap from the standard DYK rule application. It's a QPQ failure. And if that's the case, presumably the indigenous people still toss figs for the turtles? Or did that stop?

Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights "put out" what? And are we all supposed to know what "Sheroes Womyn Warriors Wall Calendar" is? Or its significance? Does this hook just mean this "center" sold calendars two years before it went out of business?
Can anyone explain this to me??

Walt Torrence Really no need to link US Army here, commonly known entity and not necessary for 99.9% of our readers, as we all know. And should point at the 1963 Pan American games, like the article does. That would also contextualise the hook temporally.
It was an intentional tease to not put the year, as college basketball players generally dont go to the armed services anymore.—Bagumba (talk) 02:20, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
It's not a tease, it's just poorly linked, and linking things like "US Army" is really inappropriate.
Nope
International Conference on the Situation in Venezuela Reps from a "dozen" countries? at an "International Conference"? WOW, stop the press. I attended an "international conference" in the middle of western Africa last week, it had reps from more than 60 countries, and it doesn't even deserve an article. Is this the best that can be done about this article, really, honestly? Nope
Darlene Lim Come on, sea of blue, do we really need to link NASA? Don't 99.95% of our readers know what NASA is? And "lava landscapes" isn't mentioned, indeed "lava" isn't mentioned in the prose. Basics. Yes
Marshmello "one of the 10" try "one of the ten" per MOS for the love of anything reasonable. This is the main page of Wikipedia, after all... Oh and it wasn't "in earnings in 2017?" it was "earnings in the year up to June 2017". Perhaps the "in 2017" means that was year he was named? And where in the prose does it talk about him being in some kind of "top ten"? All I see is "He was named by Forbes in their annual ranking of the world's highest-paid DJs in 2017 as he earned $21 million in the 12 months prior to June 2017"... The hook is so badly written, it's hard to tell. Perhaps adding this link to the article, and writing about it in the article itself would actually help verify the hook which clearly has been verified by the reviewer, the promoter etc......... Yes
Presidential exemption (Slovak State) The direct claim of "exaggeration" needs to be tempered by the fact that it is a "claim", so "that Slovak ultranationalists have exaggerated the number " should be "that it is claimed that Slovak ultranationalists have exaggerated the number ". This is, after all, an encyclopedia, and not a political vessel to be used to propose claim as fact. Nope
Joseph Forbes (educator) Classic MOS:NUM fail, see "cats and dogs". Plus, if our Kevin McE was here, I'm sure there'd be an issue over the "ownership" of those wives, i.e were they his wives or the children's?????
Oh, now I see how you're reading this — that 24 children had two wives? How about: ... that educator Joseph Forbes had 24 children from two wives? Yoninah (talk) 23:08, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
That literally makes no difference. You need to do either all numbers or all words per MOS.

DYK Grande roue de Montréal A paragraph and a whole section without a single reference, and tone issues ("offering a lively urban landscape" etc!!) how does this stuff get through QPQ let alone get loaded for the main page?
  • I added a source to the Panorama section of the article. The section now has a source. North America1000 10:13, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, but it's still missing citations for the rest of that paragraph and above, and the tone is still non-encyclopedic.
And now tagged again as 3/4 of that unencyclopedically written para is unreferenced.
Yes
Sepioteuthis australis The article doesn't say "most" commonly, it just says "commonly".
So a patently false hook is going to run... Applause.
This is a slightly debatable one. The source says the eggs are often sired by multiple males, with three the most common number. To me "most commonly" would imply more than half of the time though, which we don't know. I've therefore changed the article and hook back to "commonly". Others may disagree though.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:32, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
On reflection, this is ok, boring, but ok.
Not an error
SS Selah Chamberlain In what sense is a ship hitting another (non-notable) ship and sinking interesting?
  • An idea is that ship sinkings are typically associated with occurring at sea, rather than in one of the Great Lakes. North America1000 15:24, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
  • Interesting, I didn't know about the article, or the incidence rate. Well, whatever then! North America1000 15:57, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
  • In fact, it renders the hook even more boring as it seemed that you stood a very high chance of sinking on the Great Lakes back in the day. Ho hum!
I guess Northamerica1000's not a Gordon Lightfoot fan? Sinkings in the Great Lakes are quite common. Remember, even the smallest of the Great Lakes is roughly the size of Slovenia and the largest is only a little smaller than Austria. That's a LOT of water. --Khajidha (talk) 16:55, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Nice. Well, people seem interested in the general topic here! Meh. North America1000 17:09, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
I'm just interested in enforcing one of the pillars of DYK, namely "interesting to a broad audience". This clearly is not, along with many others I point out. I think it's finally time to remove that from the principles of DYK and just make it a winsome aim which can be summarily ignored by people gagging to get their QPQ done.
I guess
Homeric Minimum Nowhere in the article is this referred to as "Homeric solar minimum" and it barely registers on a Google search, so why make terms up for the hook? And note the article capitalises "Minimum" here...
That was a deliberate choice to make it a bit clearer what it is a minimum of. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 16:57, 5 February 2019 (UTC
I'm pretty sure we shouldn't be making up incredibly rare terms just for DYK hooks.
Yes
Nazo Dharejo "Pakistan's toughest woman" is not a nickname, it's a moniker, and which is it? The lead says "Pakistan's toughest woman" but the hook says "the toughest woman in Pakistan". Trivial to check yet heading to the main page...

Flag of Somerset County, Maryland Mildly confusing because this implies that the flag is the same as the GB flag, which it is not. It is a Union Jack with a native American Indian head in the centre. This was never used by the United Kingdom, ever. Yes
Roy Inwood The lead says the VC was "involved in the elimination of a German machine gun post and other actions" (my emphasis), so the hook is misleading, he wasn't awarded the VC for solely the machine gun post action. In fact, reading the London Gazette quote, this was just a fraction of what he was awarded the VC for.... Yes
2018 Florida Amendment 4 Bare URL fail. Yes
Marcus Chamat It's a bit misleading to say he represented Europe ten times when several of those were in a non-playing captaincy role. And just some nitty gritty, the source used here was published before the Mosconi Cup, so while it's unlikely that he didn't fulfil that appearance, the source only tells us he was selected, and not that he actually did appear. Nope

Yes
Earth's circumference Prize for most contrived hook... in true style, only DYK could state that "40,000 kilometres and 21,600 (i.e. 360 × 60) nautical miles long," was a thing. This needs rewording completely so it actually makes sense to readers, most of whom won't get it even if they can parse the seminally awkward current phrasing.
The hook makes perfect sense to me, and is very interesting. I was aware of the km part but not the nautical miles part, so I learned something. It's true that the 360x60 relevance might not be obvious to everyone but there's no way to explain that concept in a 200 word hook, so people who don't get it can click through.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:14, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
It's better now it's been changed from "and" to "or" but it's still hideously clunky.
Why not just say that "the Earth's circumference around the poles was used to define both the meter and the nautical mile?" The "360 x 60" is especially jarring, as no explanation is given as to why those particular numbers are important (I know it is because "1 nautical mile = 1 minute of arc" and that there are 60 minutes in a degree and 360 degrees in a full circle, but that may not immediately jump out at the reader). --Khajidha (talk) 12:13, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Indeed. The (i.e. 360 x 60) is gruesome.
Partially, still abjectly contrived hook
Sue Miller (cancer activist) The source doesn't say the other models had to have had mastectomies, it said they had to have breast cancer. The two are not equivalent at all.
@Amakuru: I think "have had" is better IMO. Doesn't "had had" imply that only those cured of cancer were included in the show? --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:43, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Manuel Trujillo Durán The hook is phrased in a sense that people no longer believe this. But the article begs to differ: "it is still a widespread belief in the nation — and, indeed, worldwide — that he did make the first Venezuelan films in 1897." The people still believe in Manuel!! Plus the article says "for many years" not "for nearly 100 years".
Still problematic!!

13 February 2019 DYK Operation Thunderbolt (1997) The article says the quote is "degraded and of no use on the battlefield" not "much of it degraded and of no use on the battlefield". And as this is just a plain statement of fact, there really is no necessity for quotations, just don't phrase it verbatim. Yes
Augusta Peaux Kloos didn't "complain", the article clearly states that he was simply "puzzled" by the situation. The two emotions are quite different.
Only we don't need another emotion, but verb. What would you suggest? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:56, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
I suggest we use the facts, i.e. that he was puzzled by it. We can't just make up emotions that aren't true.
You are right, and I undertstood the first time, the question was how to word that. look, we can't say "when he was puzzled about ... and sait to ..." instead of "when he complained to", and the hook was not to my liking to start with. . English speakers please. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:36, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
"puzzled by".
I said "look". You need to look at the whole phrase. - Different approach: ... that when Willem Kloos was puzzled to know of only two young talented poets in the Netherlands, Jacques Perk mentioned his childhood friend Augusta Peaux as a third? - Still think to mention two men before the women we want to get to is not the best. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:24, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
I did "look" thanks. I'm just interested in not making things up on the main page, that's all.
Changed to "said". Fish+Karate 14:26, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Yes (at least the refs)
Tidying Up with Marie Kondo The hook is nowhere near as impactful as it would be if the stats in the article were used, I mean an increase of 66% is quite staggering, but downplaying it to "reported an increase in donations" really wrecks it as a hook.
I don't know. You are stating that this is an actual error, but your estimation is only based upon your personal opinion. The "nope" for resolved implies that your opinion is superior, and that the main page will be in error unless your opinion is used, rather than that of others. Subjective. I wouldn't characterize this as an error. North America1000 08:56, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
The key point here is interesting to a broad audience, one of the tenets of the DYK process. If we're not abiding by that in creating hooks which genuinely are interesting "to a broad audience" it's a failure of process. Now thanks for your input, but if you're just going to criticise my methodology, this probably isn't the place for you. Plenty of other place, e.g. the toxic and unbelievably unhelpful WP:ERRORS page.
66% is only applicable to the Goodwill shops in Washington DC, so I dropped the mention of "and New York" so I could add in the more interesting "66%". Fish+Karate 14:26, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Jean Baptiste Guth* Either use his full name, or his pen-name (GUTH) but not something in between. Do you think anyone knows who "Guth" is? Thessaloniki Metro "inadvertently" is blatant bollocks. Of course the construction of the metro was a "deliberate" attempt to do some archaeology. The hook would be better served (and far more encyclopedic and less tabloid bullshit trash) without such a provocative term. Yes

Stephen Twinoburyo Of all the possible things about his life that could be highlighted, this is doubtlessly the most banal and disinteresting. This is a guy who did humanitarian work, educational work, and the best that could be thought up was that he claimed Ugandans claimed prices for the World Cup were too high?? Seriously? David Timm Are we supposed to know what a Jazz-Messe is? Also, it's referred to by the "RS" as "Jazzmesse" and referred to in the article as "Jazz-Messe". Is it hyphenated? Is it italicised? And .... what is it??!
I thought Jazz is so close to jazz and Messe to mass (music) thet it would be clumsy to add a translation. I saw both versions of hyphen and no hyphen, and decided for hyphen to clarify that its a composite. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:54, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
Well no, Messe is close to mess, no mass.
What do you suggest? Isn't making readers curious one of the objectives? Let them find which mess this is. - As for hyphen: inconsistent even in the same document. [1] [2] --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:03, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
For the hook, don’t know, it’s not that hooky for me as it stands, somewhat intractable. As for consistency, the least we can do for our readers is to be consistent with what we can impact.
jazz and Reger are quirkily different, and Jazzmesse and Jazz-Messe mean exactly the same, at least in German. It's almost a generic name. Sinfonie and Symphony mean exactly the same, in German at least, and both are used without disturbing "consistency". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:50, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
But this is English language Wikipedia. We should be using English words and being consistent. We can't just have three different ways of writing the same word, italics, without italics and with hyphens, it's clumsy, unprofessional and unencyclopedic. The link (or lack of link) between "Jazz messe" and whatever Reger wrote is probably clear to a mere handful of readers, no more, and as such this hook really lacks any grabbing power whatsoever I'm afraid.

The point is it’s not mentioned in the article as far as I can tell so it shouldn’t be in the hook.
I've removed European. Also agree with Gerda that it's a poor hook. If only because it has an unattributed WP:WEASEL "descibed as", which is crying out for a [by whom?] tag...  — Amakuru (talk) 13:31, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Emiliano Sala No need for "footballer", it's a given since he signed for a "football club". And it does seem quite to phrase this in the present tense, but hey.
It doesn't say "football club" in the hook. You may know what FC stands for but not all readers will. And he is the most expensive signing. "Was" would imply someone else has been purchased for more money since his signing. Fish+Karate 13:47, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
Well funny how all reliable sources I've read talk about being the most expensive signing in the past tense...
And as for adding "footballer", then you should be consistently verbose and add "newspaper" to the opening hook, because not every reader is going to see that a "column" which appeared "continuously" for 47 years actually relates to something being written in a periodical.

Assuming the "shot dead" part is a mistranslation of "fatally shot", that puts his death date on the 25th.
