Online refuelling is a technique used for changing the fuel of a nuclear reactor whilst it is critical. This technique increases the time that a nuclear plant is able to produce energy since normally, reactors would be required to shut down in order to refuel. Online refuelling is suitable for the production of nuclear weapons as the required fuel for weapon-grade isotopes can be extracted without having to shut the reactor down.
