Hello, my name is Emma and I am currently a student taking a composition course at my community college to fulfill a general education requirement at the university I attend during the school year. My parents named me Emma because my mother loved Jane Austen's novel Emma. As I have gotten older and have read the novel for myself and watched several different movie versions of Emma, I have realized that in an eerie way I can relate a lot to Jane Austen's heroine aside from simply sharing a name. Emma Woodhouse is a very outspoken lady--her tendency is to speak first, think second. Sadly, this is a characteristic I too possess and while sometimes this trait compliments Austen's main character, it also gets her into trouble on more than one occasion. Emma loves drama and takes great pleasure in pairing couples. She takes great pride in her successful career as a matchmaker for many years but eventually her medaling catches up to her and she realizes how little she knows about love when it comes to her own relationships and feelings. I can relate to a lot of her shortcomings and mistakes but also her redeemable ability to swallow her pride and ask for forgiveness. I believe that Jane Austen's relatable and lovable characters contribute to why so many people adore them now.
