Think Coffee is a coffee company and coffeehouse chain based in New York City. Think currently operates 5 stores in Lower Manhattan. The company emphasizes its dedication to a traceable and sustainable business model, in which its own employees verify that the coffee has been produced in a responsible manner. Think does not formally use third-party product certification systems. [1]

Unlike many coffee houses of a similar size, Think does not roast its own coffee. Think Blend is roasted by Red House Roasters in Union City, NJ[2].

Social & Environmental Practices[edit]

In 2010, Coffee Director Matt Fury went to Ethiopia for the first time.[3] It was after this that the company began traveling on its own to form long term, responsible relationships with coffee producers. Now, Think has personal relationships with the producer of every coffee represented in Think Blend. [4]

Sourcing[edit]

Think Coffee operates a "Farmer Relations Team." Members of the Farmer Relations Team travel to Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, El Salvador, Indonesia, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, and Costa Rica. Here, they purchase coffee, organize social development projects, and maintain relationships with farmers. [5]

  • In Mexico, the team has organized a methodology to pay workers monthly instead of annually.[6]
  • In Ethiopia, the team built a school library and distributed reusable menstrual pads to teenage girls.[7]
  • In Nicaragua, the team has worked to provide improved housing, schooling, and healthcare to workers.[8]

Community Projects[edit]

Think donates 10% of after-tax profits to local organizations The Hudson Guild and Grand Street Settlement.
All of the disposable goods given out by Think are made of compostable materials. [9]

Menu[edit]

Think serves traditional coffee and espresso beverages.[10] Think Blend is sourced by the Farmer Relations team, and served as espresso, drip, and iced coffee.[11]
A variety of breakfast items, locally baked pastries, and handmade sandwiches are available. [12]
The stores also offer a rotating menu of Single Source coffees roasted by Plowshares Coffee. [13]
