Life[edit]

Chen was born in Shanghai and grew up in Harbin, China, where he went to elementary school and middle school. He identifies himself as a homosexual. Chen moved to Braunschweig, Germany where he studied electrical engineering in 1989. Exposed to online communities in college, Chen was the moderator of a science-related forum on the German FidoNet

In 2003, Chen learned about Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation. He began to edit the German Wikipedia, and later became active on its Chinese-language counterpart. He attended Wikimania 2005 in Frankfurt, and participated in the organization of Wikimania 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan

Chen was elected as the trustee of Wikimedia in 2008, and became the 4th Chairman of Wikimedia Foundation in July 2010.[1][2][3] He was succeeded by Kat Walsh in July 2012.[4][5] Chen now works at an IT company in Mainz, Germany
