Biographical Sketch

I am an associate professor of English at Marymount University, in Arlington, VA, where I have been teaching since 2006. Though I specialize in 18th century British literature, I teach a wide variety of courses, including first-year composition, introduction to literary study, an early modern world literature survey, introduction to cultural studies, major women writers (usually focusing on 18th century authors), critical theory, and the origins of the novel. I teach both at the undergraduate and the graduate level, and I am committed to incorporating real technological literacy in my classes.

Currently, I am working on an XML database, Novels in Context, the goal of which is both pedagogical and scholarly; the long-term goal of the project is to serve as a student-generated site for the construction of high-quality, open-source, and free anthologies for use in the classroom.

From 2010-2014, I directed our graduate program in English and the Humanities. I received my doctoral degree in 2005 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where my dissertation on farce and embodied popular performance in 18th century England won the Michael Erik Myatt Distinguished Dissertation Award. From 2005-2006, I taught at Washington and Lee University as a visiting assistant professor of English.
